i just bought a 1g awd 5-speed,finally got it running, but have no first gear. if i push it into first, it just grinds and does nothing all the other gear 2-5 work so flawlessly. it atually feels like its not even going into first. so i hold the shifter forward real hard, and it feals like it starts to but when i let out the clutch, it like pops out.

please help

Sounds like a clutch or syncho issue.

Have you tried putting the car into reverse then quickly coming back to first? My dad's F150 has a worn clutch, and the ONLY way you can get it into first when sitting still is to go into reverse then quickly come back to first.

yea, ive tried everthing.... to do syncro's, does it need a full rebuild or could i do them?

tell me if im wrong........ i would think that if something in the trans BROKE then would'nt all of the gear have a problem? and when i redid the fluid, it was very clean with no particles in it

I have run my car missing 1st, 2nd, 3rd (not at the same time) and with no clutch. so if something is broken it doesnt always mean that you will lose all the gears. Sounds like synchro to me.

are these tranny's hard to tear apart, i do have considerable auto skills, but never messed with a manual

i just tore my first down to see what the gear ratio was to find out if it was compatible with my car and i wouldnt try it unless you are confident you can do it.

but it does sound like a sincro, try putting it in to first and then starting the car.

Is this they guy that started another thread about washing his motor and wonders why its sputtering?

Try shutting the car off putting it into first then starting it and driving it. then you will know if you have first or not.

The two main things that are involved with that is improper clutch disengagement (master cyl adjust or bleeding the system) or the intermediate shaft bearing is going out causing alot of pay in the main shaft. Same thing happened to mine and is happening to my replacement. So you know what i did. I took a visit to Jon at TRE and Im going with a stage 2. So 50 percent chance you need a rebuild.

Bad syncro, push it foward super hard and hold it. then let the clutch out really slow and it'll probly click and enguage

I could be wrong but i dont think first gear is common to lose. I would check your shift linkage first. at least first gen's are adjustable. my second gear has no hope. there are two turn buckle's under the console and i think there is a thread on how to adjust them.

here, try this: Shifter Adjustment

good luck.

would it have side to side movement adjustment. My brothers feels like the gears are all shifted to the right. For the OP, I would change the trans fluid and make sure it has the proper amount if you havent. Then I would try the shifter adjustment, and take a look at the cables and there connections. Maybe the guy swiped the washers too.

Have you checked the master clutch cylinder? I had the same problem too. First and reverse wouldn't engage properly, so I checked the clutch cylinder and the bastard was leaking. I changed it and now my car has no problem going into gears.

NEW UPDATE;; i decided to try to get it into first gear in any way that i could so i took off in 2nd gear then once i started rolling i put it back into 1st gear and it worked. so i do have first. it just wont stay in 1st from a stop, syncros?

once i took the car in the street and got into first, i revved to the moon and hit second............to find that there was no 2nd, but the shifter got real hard to work, so i looked under the hood , took my forward and back shiter cable off.... bingo...........its broke at the little rubber end that it looks like it was supposed to be a ball and socket but is ripped apart. also the side to side cable is broke in the same way but the short boot is still holding it together.

just wanted to thank everyone for the insight and comments especially, PJ91GSX
