Okay, first off HELLO!

I hope I do not get banned for what I am about to ask:

Recently I found out my 3rd plug is arcing, and I have looked over all of my spark plugs, and checked the wires with a timing light. Everything seemed normal. The guys at the shop said I need new wires, plugs, distributor, distributor cap, as well as a distributor rotor. I do not think all of that is necessary. I will try just changing out the 3rd plug, if that doesn't work, then I will do the wires. Do I really need to do ALL of that? They estimated 400 to fix everything, and I have had this car for two months. 1994 Eagle Talon 2L. FWD.

I am not very much of a gear head, I know very very little and grew up w/out a father so im just learning all of this. Also, my serpentine belt is too loose and is squealing bad and when my AC is on, my engine will bog horribly down! ANOTHER problem is my sterring wheel shakes like mad when I brake. I am sad to see all of these things start to happen...

Pics for you all coming soon. Please help me guys! Thanks alot!

Your steering wheel shaking is probably warped rotors. You can have them machined if they have enough meat on them, but the cost to replace them is so cheap, you might as well get new pads and rotors at the same time. As a precaution, I would inspect all the steering parts for play (tie rod ends, rack and pinion, etc.)

Replace your belts. If it's time to do so, change your timing belt. Make sure the AC pulley moves freely and doesn't bind up.

Spark plugs are $8 for all 4. Spark plug wires are, at most, $80. They take about ten minutes to change. Charging $400 to do this job is insanity. Change them all at once. You also shouldn't have a distributor cap and rotor unless your motor is a 1.8 liter. If so, then change the cap and rotor at the same time. Don't get the firing order messed up. If you have a 2.0, then you have a distributorless ignition. If you can get a pic of your engine bay, we can help determine this for you.

looks like this guy is shaking on your wallet:rolleyes:

dont just go spend 400 bucks. try to solve the problem step by step.

start with the spark plugs since they are the most obvious/cheapest

pick up a set of NGK BPR6ES then if that doesnt work, get the plug wires.

as for the brakes, excessive vibration happens when one side of the pad is more worn down than the other and vice versa. inspect your pads/rotors.

finally, welcome:D

here are some pictures that maybe someone can get a better idea at? There is no distributor that I see.....why the heck did those guys say I needed a new one and rotor, cap etc etc.... (HONEST MECHANICS) was their name....hahahaha If the pictures didn't show let me know and I will try again with a copy paste method??:talon:

Where you're lifting up some hoses, that black box the spark plug wires are plugged into is your coil. You don't have a distributor, cap, or rotor. So they were going to charge you $400 to replace $86 worth of parts that take 10 minutes to remove and reinstall. Car looks clean. I like the valve cover.

Wow. That's ridiculous! What a crack up. ROFLThanks alot man, this should be an easy fix and back up to some horsies in no time. I am picking up the NGK BPR6ES set tomorrow, any wires you guys recommend? nothing over 100?

The NGK BPR6ES is the stock plug for a turbocharged DSM. For a NT 4g63, you may require something different. Any parts store should be able to tell you which is correct. A side note: Turbo DSM's react very badly to platinum plugs. In most cases, the stock plug is all you'll ever need, so don't spend more than you have to.

Stock NGK plug wires also work just fine. You can get them at the dealer or most DSM vendors.

Same plug, different gap.
BPR6ES-11 is a 1.1mm gap (0.043") plug. You can use the BPR6ES and regap them.

Thanks a bunch you guys! Solved the problem today, got some silicone spark plugs for $40, they were on sale at my checkers and were usually around 60. The other stock ones were 30. Very very easy installation, and BAM. Problem solved. I can't believe how bad I almost was suckered, and in turn have learned alot from this issue. You all have my devotion. Thanks a ton again! Now all I need is to tighten my damn belt, however I can manage that. Been looking for the bolt all day...any one know of how I can do this?:beatentodeath:

Now all I need is to tighten my damn belt
That is when you loosen up the two bolts - the upper pinch bolt and the lower pivot bolt- on the ALT and pry the ALT towards the radiator to tighten up that belt (if this is the belt that is loose...)

It's not unusual for some "indie" shops to seek out those who don't know anything about cars and then soak them for what ever they can get out of that customer, but never tell them what is obviously and simply wrong with their car. Why a lot of "weekend mechanics" do their own work - knowing two things: they did it themselves and know exactly what has been done along with saving tonnage on the wallet expenses.

Good luck - DSM

I see, that is what I thought it was. Thanks a lot man, never listening to my neighbor again. -_-. And never bringing my ride into a shop again. I'll just come here :). I would recommend you guys all for rep points but it stated I am not alowed to yet. But when I can!.....No doubt sons! Thanks again and this issue has been fixed!
