I have searched this subject and only found questions about replacing it. My input shaft bearing on my transmission from my 98 Mits Eclipse GS-T Spyder is going out, I know this because I just replaced the clutch and throwout bearing about a week ago for a sound coming from my trans. It whines in all gears including neutral but goes away when I push in the clutch. The question I actually have is, what type of bearing is the input shaft bearing? Is it a tapered roller bearing or a ball bearing? I have only found manuals on the internet and they show a ball bearing but when I called up to the local NAPA they could only find a tapered roller bearing for an Eagle Talon of the same year. Before I ordered it I wanted to be absolutely sure that it was the same bearing and didn't vary in any way from the different makes.
Thanks in advance guys.

It is a tapered roller bearing. Go to Mitsubishi for the part.

As well, do you know how to rebuild a transmission? Do you have a shop press?

Yeah I am a technician at a Ford dealership so I have the tools to do it and I know what I am doing for the most part LOL. Thanks a lot for the input man.

Alright now the bearing almost locks up every time I try to move, the car bucks extremely bad and grinds. I am tearing it out again tomorrow to see what everything looks like. Thanks again for the help, if anyone thinks of anything else they think I should know then I will still check this thread, Thank you.

Do you guys happen to know what all snap rings and washers I am going to need. If its going to be too much of a fight to do all of this I might just call up a friend that has a spare FWD trans out of a 1g sitting in his garage.

There are only 2 snap rings, one for the intermediate shaft and one for the input shaft. The shim sets are the same for the intermediate and input shaft, there only on one side of the gear sets, where the race for the tappered bearings meet the end of the middle section of the case on the opposite side from the bell housing(if that doesnt make sense smack me). so you will need 2 sets.

Your a 2g you cant swap the 1g trans into a 2g, the mounts are different, it only works the other way. :notgood: That and you can't really reuse any of those parts, it says in the factory manual to replace the shims and snap rings with new ones. Also to put the snap rings on your going to need the **special** tool that is one of those wonderful MD#'s that i don't have around me right now. When i get back to my computer and manual ill throw the part numbers for the tool and snap rings up on here since i just got mine on Saturday for my 97.

As far as getting the bearing and replacing it, I believe there Mitsubishi Dealership only parts, ither the bearing or the race on every bearing with the exception of one i pulled from Input, Intermediate, Output, and Differential was a Mistu. only part. And if your going to take the time to replace one, you might as well replace them all. just my .02 And your deffinately going to need a press to take them off and put them back on.

Alright I just pulled the trans out and found that my flywheel had been touching the clutch housing and was part of my grinding sound. The collar that the throwout bearing slides over had broken off because the throwout bearing had locked and when I pushed in on the clutch it twisted with the clutch and then twisted the collar off. Now I need a new clutch housing, and a new throwout bearing. I ordered the input shaft bearing and the other essentials but I guess I have a few more items to add to the parts list.

I am going to call around to a couple salvage yards tomorrow to see if i can find a used transmission but first I wanted to ask if there was a difference in the transmissions in a turbo eclipse and a n/t eclipse. I thought I had heard someone saying that they turbo eclipse transmissions had a few different internals, like stronger gears or something. I don't exactly know so your input would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

Well, first off...it is a COMPLETELY different transmission and engine in the non-turbo 2G eclipses -- the 4G63 turbo FWD 1995-1999 transmission will be the ONLY one that fits in your car. Period.

Alright thanks a lot, thats what I wanted to know... I talked to my Professor at my University that I go to for Autmo Tech and he said the new machinist in the tech building might be able to weld the part that broke back on there without any problems. I might go that route first and see if that works. If that turns out bad then I guess I will be on the search again for a trans.

One more thing I noticed was that the shim that goes in between the motor and the bell housing of the transmission was broken into two pieces and bent. I was wondering if it would affect anything if i left it out. If the throwout bearing would be too close to the pressure plate or something like that. Thanks guys.

If you leave that plate out it would cause problems for the starter engagement on the flywheel ring gear. You need to have that plate inbetween the transmission and the engine for proper engagement of the starter.

As well, I would seriously reccomend either a replacement bellhousing, throwout bearing, clutch fork and pivot ball, or the purchase of a replacement transmission. Also look for wear on the clutch disk engagement splines due to the damage you have received from the failure of the throwout bearing/bellhousing sleeve. More than likely your input shaft has damage, or has been bent.

Personally, I would go the route of purchasing a replacement transmission.

I have looked around here for a replacement transmission for about a week now and all of the Eclipse bodies I have found have already had the engine and transmissions salvaged out of them. I would go the route of buying one off of the internet, or just simply sending mine off to get it rebuilt and possibly built stronger but lack of funds has left both of those an impossibility. I have checked everything that I can see in the bellhousing, on and around the clutch, the starter and all related components including the clutch fork and I think that the only thing that was damaged was the throwout bearing and the sleeve it rides on. I have even gone as far as to borrow a straight edge and check the input shaft for warpage or damage but it is still as straight as it was before. I am taking the bellhousing to a machinist and accomplished welder at Pittsburg State University to have him tig weld the sleeve back on. If it shows any signs that it won't be able to stand up to what I will put it through then I won't think twice about looking for something else. If anyone looking at this thread knows of someone with just a bellhousing that they would like to get rid of then I will most likely be interested. I greatly appreciate the help you have all given me.
