Does this SBR cast race manifold look new or used? Rust?

Hey guys,

I just got a SBR cast race manifold shipped to me from Street Tuned Motorsports. I never actually bought a exhaust manifold before, but it looks used to me. Can you guys tell me what you think? What are those brown spots? Dirt? Rust? Please help me out. Click on the link to see detailed photos. Also, compare them to the pics STM has on their website of what a new one should look like.

Light surface rust? If I clean it will it cause any issues in the future such as more rust in those spots? Any recommendation for stuff to clean off rust and anti-rust protectant products that I can use on the manifold?

Besides getting it ceramic coated there is not much you can do about it rusting. Cleaning it will not cause any issues. But it will come back if the manifold is not coated.

I have the same manifold and mine got surface rust all over it from not being used. After a few heat cycles the rust came off though. Here is a picture of what mine looked like before being used.

You will always have surface rust on cast iron pieces, it's just he nature of the metal. This will, in no way, affect it's performance. If you are that concerned about how it looks then send it to FFWD (one of the supporting vendors and have them Aluminum Ceramic Coat the manifold. It will look like this:

The heating and cooling of any ferrous material will ultimately lead to surface oxidation throw in some humidity at the cooling cycle and you have the perfect recipe for surface rust. BTW that manifold looks brand new.:thumb:

This is an update on the quality of the SBR cast race manifold. Thanks to everyone that posted above to help with figure out whether the manifold is new or used. Your replies were really helpful.

This exhaust manifold was installed at the same time my FP 18g-6SL2 turbo was installed in my car. After the installation, we checked for exhaust leaks and found a leak on the exhaust manifold where one of the external wastegate bolt would go. I knew SBR had some quality control issues on their products and unfortunately my manifold had that slight issue that I had to fix.
Before bolting it on the head I cleaned off the surface rust and sprayed 2 layers of DEI rust resistant paint on the manifold. Once the car was back up and running again I went for a little drive. First thing I noticed was that the car sounds louder. I'm currently running stock boost on the 18g until I get the fuel pump and afpr, but from initial impressions the car feels stronger and full boost (10-11psi) is reached at around 3,200 RPM. I'll try to check again to see when I get full boost since I was just enjoying the drive and not paying too much attention to the RPM gauge. I also just got my DSMlink, so I'll try tuning this weekend, too.

Overall, the SBR cast race manifold seems to be a good buy minus the defect that needed to be fixed. I noticed that SBR doesn't even sell their cast race manifold anymore. It seems that they only have the HAFE version. I can't wait to push my new setup and see how good the mid range and top end is! I will be posting a more detailed review in the review section once I install the other fuel support mods and get more mileage on the manifold.
