Should I do anything about this? (turbo compressor housing pic)

well i bought this turbo (FP TD05-18G), and it had excessive shaft play, so i rebuilt that bad boy's center cartridge, checked against FP spec and it's good to go.

now i'm left staring at the Compressor housing looking like those pictures.

obviously they're from the contact made by the compressor wheel. the marks from the foreward edge of the blade are unnoticeable by running my fingernail over the housing. the other marks tho do scratch lightly the side of the housing. those i can feel with running my fingernail on it.

so what's your guys opinions, what do I do about the situation? for my situation, the turbo will be bolted up to a pretty stock setup and will be turned to about 13PSI for now, and go up progressively as 750CC injectors, FMICs and etc. are added.

i know that i'll lose some volumetric efficiency, but somehow i don't think at 13PSI it'll make much of a difference.

i've entertained the idea of a bastard 20G, but am unsure whether the machining needed to fit a 20g wheel will take care of the damage, and whether it's actually worth it or not. plus brand new FP TD06-18G's are like $700, and a much better option (apparently the 20G wheel is useless, as the TD05 hotside is just incapable of flowing enough to turn that big of a wheel efficiently)

so what do you guys think?

The compressor cover on my FWD TSi has deeper grooves than the one in your photo, and it continues to perform fine after the compressor wheel was replaced. I think you could run that cover.

If you'd want to do the 20G compressor and cover swap, it's possible....the backplate is the same diameter on the 16G, 18G, and 20G wheels.

Who told you that the 05H hotside is too small for a 20G? Some of the most fun-to-drive 20G's on the road have TD05H turbines.

Smoth them out with some 220 for a quick burst, then work them with 400 for a little while and at the very most finish smoothing the surface with 600 grit , and wet sand if you really want it smooth. But you could just quick scuff it all around with some 320 and be cool.

I'f you've got access to a lathe to mount the housing in, it's super easy to spin it up and stick some snadpaper to it and it'll polish/sand out in just a few short minutes.

Or you could leave it alone, either way i wouldn't be scared to run it, and i doubt it's costing you much power... 1/5th a horse maybe LOL i dont know?

Go bastard 20g for the win IMO.... Love the 20G's punch, and having even sooner spool..whoooweeeeee!!! if i could do it all over from the start I'd have a 20G based build most likely. I love my garret, but a 20g might be limited in very top end power performance, but what you get in return from the punch and pull of that turbo is worth it IMO.. Especially if your car is a daily driver! I've seen 400 - 425 out of them easily, but not sure how well they perform or if they can be pushed much over that. But i've never seena 20G compressor map either, so i could be wrong and it could make way more..i don't know

i think all the people that say the 20g's not worth it want more power out of it then the TD05 can give them.... they're not sticking them in daily driven vehicles.....

i don't think i'm gonna sand anything or do any of that stuff.... as far as i can tell, that would only make a bigger gap all the way around, as opposed to only the little bit of scarring it's got as it is.

also, i bought this turbo used with a goal in mind, and that goal was to put it back together on the cheap. so far i'm $200 in and with brand new TD06-18G's in the $700 neighborhood, i don't know about the cost factor.

i bought it for $100, $100 for a FP rebuild kit, and $100 for an 18G wheel. that's right about where i wanted to be as far as investment in this thing. the 20G wheel's another $25 plus i'd be paying to have it machined.
