That is a 1g's CAS, Cam Angle Sensor. It tells the computer when to fire the coils and injectors. Just think of it a the replacement of a distributor. Yours on a 2g, is located behind the Crankshaft Pulley and does the same thing.

It's the Cam Angle Sensor CAS, It's from a 1G. The 2G looks different but you have one. 2G's use the 1G CAS after a 6 bolt swap.

if you have a motor swap from a 95 you won't have one yours will be a small black piece underneath your intake cam that will looke completely different.

I"m not sure if you need a 1gCAS w/ DSMLink. But every car i've seen with dsmlink has a 1g CAS on it too.

That's incorrect as both the '95 and '96 had them on the timing belt side of the engine.

Here's all the years and locations:

1G ('90-'94) - on the end of the intake cam (as shown in the picture in post 1)
2G ('95-'96) - on the timing belt side of the block
2G ('97-'99) - same location as the 1G, just not adjustable

on a 2g with a 6 bolt short block and a 2g head will you still need the cas if you have DSMLINK?

Yes, you need a CAS no matter what. It's just a difference between having a 1G adjustable CAS or not.

No, you do not need to have a 1G CAS to run DSMlink.

Here's 2 links about both the 1G and the late 2G CAS (includes a picture and some info):

http://members.shaw.ca/dsm.1000q/Engineprimer/2G/cas.htm

And here's a link that has a picture (or at least a decent attempt at one) of the early 2G CAS:

Guys I think this is making a mountan out of a mole hill all the OP asked was why his 96 did not have a CAS on the end of his intake cam.ROFL
