i have a 91 galant vr4 i recently purchased. whenever im coasting in gear then let off the throttle the car jerks pretty hard back and forth, then it sounds like a grinding sound if i dont switch to neutral. i havent had a chance to look under the car yet, but i dont know exatly what i would be looking for, if anyone could help me out or atleast point me ina direction.

thanks matt

Check all the motor mounts. That may be the jerking caused by the torque of the motor. As for the grinding it may just be the typical DSM transmition. I would check your shifter linkage though especially the shifter bushings at the end. Most people replace the stock rubber ones with solid bushings.

Yes, check those motor mounts. Even though they're all bolted up it can still be broken in the center black area. If that's the case then the torque of the motor will cause it to jerk and this is going to pull on your shift linkages which is going to try to change gears and grind. When you tap the gas or let off is there excessive moving of the shifter? This would be a good indication of a broken motor mount also.
