I got a 92 GVR4 and i decided to check the ecu for leaking caps. Well i didnt like what i found. the caps were definately leaking and it has effected some of the surrounding components. my question is how do you know that it is beyond repair? and second is there a place where if it is beyond repair i can just buy a seperate eprom board that doesnt have a chip in it and just put my eprom in it so my GVR4 will work right?

If you're on the galantvr4.org boards, send a PM to Terry Posten, he might be able to repair some of the damage. Was the car running with that ECU, or was it DOA? If it is damaged beyond repair, any 91-94 1G ecu will work as a replacement.

i heard that it has to be eprom and it must be programmed for a gvr4 because of the fuel trims? i have a turbo ecu from a 91 tsi awd 5speed but it is non eprom. are you saying that that ecu will work?

It will work. They don't have to be eprom, it just happens that all GVR-4's had an eprom ecu from the factory. When I bought my Galant, the previous owner pulled the ecu and replaced it with a non-eprom unit, it ran fine. I swapped it because I had an extra Keydiver chip laying around that I wanted to use, but I would've been fine with the non-eprom unit in there.

The only differences are the idle speed (800 rpm on a GVR-4) and the MAS compensation (the differences between a GVR-4 and 1G mas are minimal). Neither difference will have any impact on driveability.
