well I was in the process of putting my motor back together when i notice the number 4 piston ring one of the skinny ones on the bottom i think it is the number 1 ring was not sitting right and was scraping the walls. now i got to take it back to the machine shop to get it honed again. my question is do you think i will have to take it all apart or can i just put a rag in the bottom of the cylinder and have them hone out that one cylinder?

also will i still be able to use the piston ring. this is the only one that was scraping it is not borken. will i have to buy a new set of rings?

I'm not sure what you're really asking... Did the ring gouge a groove in the cylinder? Did the ring bind in the cylinder? Is this the top ring on the piston or the bottom ring on the oil control ring? Who put the bottom end together? Did they check the ring end gap? Did they check the cylinder for out-of-roundness? Were the cylinders bored over?

Get a dingle berry hone and clean it out quick if you want a cheap fix

But I would take the time and just have it all re-done

For new rings a block build its about 450 from my shop, I know its a PITA but depending on the condition of the block you may want to consider this

good luck!

If there is any question as to the condition of the ring then I would get a new one, I also would take apart the bottom end as a rag will not be enough protection against filling your bottem end with all the junk from honing.

the ring did gouge a groove in the cylinder walls. I just got it back from the machine shop and everything checked out fine. the ring that was the problem was the one on the way bottom of the piston. after inspecting it it does not look kinked or damaged maybe a lit tweaked but not much if any. I had the blocked bored because i am installing a eagle stroker kit. I did check all the ring gap and it all checked out fine. I just finished putting on the oil ppimp and main front cover along with the balance shft belt and gears. I did not notice it before because i had the engine upside down on the engine stand. I am taking it to the machine shop tomorrow to get it rehoned..
