I've got a rebuilt 14b sitting around and have a concern regarding side-to-side shaft play. The compressor does spin freely except when pushed to the sides and seems like it may be contacting the housing... it's hard to tell for sure. There's a slight amount of in-and-out play as well but doesn't seem too bad there.

How concerned should I be with using this turbo?

Thanks

You shouldn't have any in-out shaft play, and if side-side touches the housing, that's too much, too. The guidelines are: 1) No in-out shaft play, and 2) If you have side-side, it's okay as long as it doesn't touch the housing. Yours seems to violate both guidelines.

Is there any sign that the edges of the vanes have been rubbing on the housing?

You might opt to rebuild it (see www.vfaq.com).

EDIT: Just noticed that you said it's already rebuilt.

Some side to shaft play is allowable. Check your FSM for specs.
Side to side play that allows contact is not acceptable. Running it like that will result in a big expensive repair bill - definitely to the turbo and perhaps to your motor.

These things are really pretty simple to rebuild.. Just mark the compressor allignment with the shaft.

kenamond,

It's hard to tell exactly if there's too much side-to-side play as the vanes look to be in good shape and there's no scoring in the housing. There's about a millimeter of in-and-out play which is a bit unsettling.

contact the housing = too much. period.

They're pretty easy to rebuild.
