Feel free to laugh at me all you want, I deserve it.
So I decided to install a boost guage. No biggie right? Well, capt. dumb ass here decided to drill a hole in the fire wall so I could just pass the line through and mount the guage. I looked over everything on both sides before I started and found where I wanted to drill my hole. Guess I should have gone about two more inches to the right....
I couldn't seem to find where the bit passed through in the engine compartment so I said screw I'll just tackle it tomorrow. Started up the car and my idle shot straight up to 3K hitting fuel cut. Yeah, it usualy goes to 2K because my ISC has a bad step, but this was wierd. When it warmed up, it had this idle like a combination of a 350 with a cam crossed with a WRX. Something was amiss. took it for a drive and the brakes hardley worked.
Thats right boys and girls!!! I just drilled a hole in my brake vacuum resevore (what's this thing called anyways?) yay!!:notgood:

So I suppose my question now is, how much is a new one, do you think I can get a used one for cheep, and how much of a enormus pain in the ass is it going to be to put this new one in? From the looks of things, I'm going to have to pull damnd near all the brake components off of the front, lie on my back upside down in my seat and try to reach the four bolts that look nearly impossible to get too way up above the pedals. :barf:

Some words of advise please.

Its called a brake power booster.

You about got it figured out, though. Its not very difficult at all. It looks like about $160 for you.

What did we learn? Measure twice, cut once.

To add more insult to injury on this one. You probably wont be able to turn your booster in for core credit when you get a new one since you drilled a hole in yours. :thumb:

Thanks guys. A lesson well learned!
One question/theory
Is this thing just a solid drum of metal used to hold vacuum? If so, and since it's such a small hole, could I just thread it and sticked a coated bolt in there to block the leak avoiding replacing the whole thing?

Thats what I was thinking...but im not saying do it....I just though it would be interesting.

prehaps, I have little knowledge about the brake booster, other than the fact that if you want to stop, you need it. I had a brake booster go bad on my lumina once while driving and I thought I was going to die. Any how, I think it may not be a good idea, since brakes are SOOOOOOOOOO important, I would rather see you bite the bullet and replace it instead of putting your life and the lives of others in danger because of the possiblily of your patch failing.

Just my .02

I agree with T is for TURBO. It may suck to have to pay for the mistake with cash, but its better than paying for it with your life if your brakes dont work one day. It should only cost about $170 for a replacement.

Measure twice, drill once.......u shoulda just cut the steering column boot like the other 99.93% of us.

Yeah hind sight is 20/20. I should have searched first instead of just going at it. These cars can be a bit tricky compared to past cars I worked on.
Thanks for the support everyone. I'm suprised I didn't get too many of these:tease:

It is more than a vacuum reservoir. This actually does something. It is mostly valving though. Could you repair it? Depends, look inside and see if you damaged ANYTHING in there. If not, you could plug the hole.

Would I do it? Hell no. I recommend against it. As stated above, brakes are far to important a thing to be doing something so risky. If you cannot afford a new one, a junkyard item will be fine. Dont even do it as a "temporary" fix, as temporary often turns into forever.

The fix idea was just a passing thought. It will be replaced I can assure you. I removed it yesterday and to my suprise, it came out easier than I was thinking it would. For the record, the inner diaphram was punctured as well.
I'll probably just pick up a used one or perhaps look into a pm. I received about one. Thanks everyone! Oh.....took me two seconds to slice a small slit in the steering column boot.:coy: lesson well learned.

After searching around a bit and realizing that there is limited info on the Power Brake Booster, I figured I would post what little info I found to help others in the future.
It seems that cars with ABS use the double or tandem diaphragm power brake booster while the non abs cars use the single. I don't know about models such as turbo and non turbo, AWD or FWD, or if it makes a difference. All I could find that seperated the two was ABS or NON ABS.
I can also take pictures of the install if anyone think's it will be a good tool to help others. It's just a part that dosent get replaced all that often.
