Hello, Im completely new to the DSM world. Not even particularly fond of FWD. However in my situation it just might be cheaper to buy a fwd one and built it. Anyways, i have a few quick Qs.

First off, Im in Ca, So is there anything i can do in Ca to put a DSM into 13s without drag suspension and still pass smog without having to remove a ton of parts before the test?

2. Is it possible to find a dirt cheap DSM(1-2k) of either generation that will still be reliable and handle some abuse at the track.

Is there anything i should look for when shopping for a DSM?

Anytime you bring a car that's 10 years old plus to the track, you're going to break something. It wouldn't be that hard to hit the 13's and still pass your smog tests, but expect to break stuff .. so if it doesn't happen then you can celebrate, but if it does then you can say you expected it.

13's is only .7 seconds away, turn the booost up 2 psi and get supporting mods and you might be there.

uhm what boost? I was talking about an NA. As far as i know there isnt a smog legal blower/turbo kit for these cars.

Wells- that wont bug me, you race anything enough and it will break. I would just rather it be my 2nd car and not my daily driver.

LOL. You had me going there for a sec.

N/T? Christ almighty...there's no way you are going to have a 13 sec. N/T dsm and still have it pass smog (legally).

If you're not planning on boost, it is going to a very long and difficult road getting to 13 seconds, if you even get there. You're going to need major work, I/H/E, stage 3 cams, cam gears, tons of fuel managment, hours of tuning, ported, polished, bored, stroked whatever it takes, 9870788 dollars later and you MIGHT just MAYBE if you tune for 7 days on end you might get close, I know this isn't always the best suggestion but if you don't plan on going turbo usually for the reason of the cost, if you were to just buy a GSX to begin with it'll be cheaper than getting a 420a into the 13's.

if your are looking to build something look into a 1gen with little mods in it. make sure you find a 6 bolt 4G63 motor, due to its ability to take more abuse. awd is nice but i have a fwd thats running in the low 12 for very little money. only 5 k or so with no suspension upgrades other than a strut bar. good luck!
