Belle River,
So my car is in good shape. In no need of a rebuild. I do want to do the timing belt though. The car has a balance shaft and belt on it now.In sted of tearing into the engine to remover the shaft. Can I just leave the belt and tensioner off when I do the timing belt? Will this hurt anything? I just see it as a easy means of security for now. When the time comes for a rebuild then I'll do the full removal. Has anyone ever run their car like this? thanks for any help.

You'd still have the rear balance shaft, which is driven by the oil pump, to worry about. Either replace the balance shaft belt with the timing belt, or pull both shafts.

If you remove the ballance shaft belt you will have a serious vibration, I would install a new belt or remove both shafts and get the BS eliminator kit

Taknks for the info. I'll just replace the belt then. I don't want to tear into the engine when there is no need to at this time. I'll save that for down the road.

as stated above, without a belt on the ballance shaft you will get crazy vibration, and you have to make sure the ballance shaft is in the right possition, the tick marks can line up and you can still will be 180 degrees out. to make sure it is right you have to take a bolt out of the back of the block, stick in a screwdriver check the depth etc.
but if both belts are still on then it will make life easier. as everyhting should be already in line.
