They seem to have better interest rates than banks so I am thinking of making the switch. There's one in my area open to anyone, so I'm giving them a call tomorrow. Anyone have any experience with them?

I used the one through my work and they are great. Gave me a great intrest rate, way better then the dealer or bank, and had the payment deducted from my check; one less bill I have to send in/remember.

I use Navy Federal. Insufficient funds, finance charges and interest rates are usually lower at credit unions than banks. Loans are usually easier to be approved by a credit union also.

FCU's are extremely popular here in SE Texas, I have 2 of them myself(1 back in Cali, and 1 here) in addition to my Capital One account that is my primary. The big difference is when you want to take a loan out, they are more often times than not going to be a better choice to finance vehicles and such through because of the lower interest rates they can offer you. Although at the moment, Capital One is offering me a great rate compared to what my CU can do on refinancing my house.

A majority of the ones around my area are very small and only have a few branches, so it's advantageous to you when you need to borrow money. They know how much of a risk you really are because they are local and it's deal with on a local level. Say you buy a new GM vehicle and go through GMAC(are they still in business?) someone in a completely different state could be dealing with your credit app, and all they do is run your credit and base there decision from what they find on your report. To a local FCU, they see more than just a number...
