During a trip to my family's place two days ago, I noticed that at anything above 70mph that the steering wheel shakes and gets worse the faster I go. Anyway, I was working on the car the next day and noticed that if I grabbed the bottom of the wheel (both driver and passenger side) and checked for play (I was underneath the car working on something else) that there was a little bit of play on both sides. At first I thought it was the wheel bearing(s), but when I pulled in and out on top of the wheel, there was no movement. Pulling on both sides of the wheel produced no movement either. I rotated the tires thinking maybe the front wheels were bent or something, but it didn't change anything.
Anyone have any ideas? I've hit 3 potholes on the crappy roads up here on the passenger side, and I've hit 1 pothole on the driver's side. I don't do much highway driving and subsequently rarely ever go more than 65mph, so I never noticed before. I also hit a speed bump at about 5-8mph that I didn't see when it was raining because the yellow paint on it looked like it was 30 years old. I'm thinking worn tie rod ends, and/or the wheels just need to be balanced (like maybe some of the weights came off or something). Oh yeah, these are the stock GS-T rims with 215/50/16 tires.
