Hey guys. My question is this, obviously us AWD guys kill tires very quickly. And high performance tires arent cheap. So do most of you AWD guys by High Performance tires and only run them on the track, and then use signifigantly cheaper tires on the street? Or do most of you just run the Ultra High Performance tires on street and on track? Just trying to find the best thing to do. Thanks a lot.

I run what the Tire Rack considers to be a Max Performance Summer tire on the street. I switch to R-compounds at events.

Note: I don't see why AWD is harder on tires than 2WD. It's not the type of drivetrain that is rough on the tires of a car that is both a daily driver and a race car ... it's the alignment. Put another way, the biggest advantage of having a trailer queen is that you don't have to compromise your racing alignment for daily driving.

I guess if an AWD guy did a lot of burnouts, he would run through tires faster than a FWD guy. Even then, the FWD guy with equivilent power would be harder on the 2 tires he was burning out. I would think in general an AWD car would be easier on tires though as far as burnouts go. But if the majority of your wear is during non-burnout time, it would just be alignment settings like Jtoby said.

But to give you some additonal info on your question, none of the local AWD drag race guys I know run slicks or anything, just whatever they run on the street. You'd kill trannys and difs quicker running drag slicks on an AWD on the drag strip. Something's got to give. What kind of racing do you do?
