j,
I found a 96 Talon. It's black, 5-speed and AWD! :D Here is the add:

1996 EAGLE TALON, turbo, AWD, 5spd, leather, pwr roof, 90k miles, needs transmission, $4200

Not bad, eh? What would a new and used tranny cost? I would have a garage to work at, no lift though, and help to install it. I wouldn't think it would be very hard.

Other than the tranny, I know I should look for frame/body damage, crankwalk, timing belt done at 60k miles (what does a shop charge?), balance shaft (when should that be done and how much for a shop to do it?), compression test, turbo shaft play and other misc. things.

A while back I saw some kinda tutorial with pictures on how to check over a turbo when buying a used car. Anyone know the site for this?

Thanks

for great trannies, go here www.teamrip.com

take the intake off your turbo, look for lots of oil, some is normal, then see if you can see scuff marks by the compressor wheel on the housing walls. if thats good, grab the nut on the end of the wheel as best you can and try to move it up/down and in/ out. if it has no play or VERY little (like .02" or less) it should be good to go

I don't know. It takes alot of abuse to trash a transmission. Better check over that motor REALLY REALLY well. Compression test. Leakdown test. The whole works.
