I was cruising on the interstate the other day at about 70 when all of a sudden my back-end started hopping like the rear was trying to lock. It felt just like an instant blow-out, or better yet like my back tires changed shape from circular to square instantly. There was no warning sounds, and it happened all at once, not gradually. All the fluids (trans, x-fer, rear-dif.) are good. I've got all four wheels off and I've ran it in all the gears and watched from underneath and I can't find what it is. The wheels spin freely, the tranny works perfectly. The only thing is that the driver side of the rear-differential has sprung a leak. My best guess is that the rear driver-side axle did something bad and the catastrophic jolt broke that seal open. Like I said though the dif. had plenty of fluid. Could my CV joint have gone bad? All at once like that? Could the wheel bearing be bad? It still spins freely with no strange sounds. If anyone has ANY ideas or comments or similar situations PLEASE respond to this.

Sounds like the axle broke. Pull it and take a look.

Look at what exactly? If the axle is broken, wouldn't it just snap? I don't understand. Like I said, I can see all four wheels are turning when the clutch is engaged. I can see it cause I have it off the ground. So could it still be broken and I just can't see it or what?

The axle could break past the boots (most common) and you cannot see it until you pull it out and take a look.

You probably stripped some teeth off of it, so it is intermittently grabbing and grinding. PS Driver side rear is most common axle to break.

Regardless, if it's leaking, you have to pull it to fix it.
