Hey everyone i'm thinking about getting a 95 talon gsx or gs-t leaning more to the gs-t since i've heard the gsx are hard to find and are expensive, but was wondering should i even bother with a gs-t for track? I plan on racing pretty much on street and track not really on the highways. I have read the post of awd vs fwd but is it really that big of a difference? thanks all, im just trying 2 go fast :)

You're going to get a ton of mixed opinions on this. By track, do you mean dragstrip or road course or autocross parking lot? That will narrow the factors down a bit.

When i was DSM shopping i went FWD simply due to the price of AWD (had to have a 2g), also thinking id race mostly on the street  , and a little bit at the strip. Turns out i absolutly LOVE legal drag racing, and the street seems more a waste of time. I would give anything to have it to do over again...and get an AWD. i've spent a fair amount of money on mods (considering my 7 buck an hour job), and only seeing the trap speed increase isnt too satisfying. After some periods of evaluation i realized i was dumping the clutch after about 4k on my launch...so next time out (damn rain) ill have the DR's on and a better launch..but still. For all go and a little show, get a 1g awd..i hope to next summer...guys run 12's on the STOCK turbo and with only free mods can get solid mid 14's, awd is just sooo much better for the track. However, if your looking for a challenge, go for the fwd :thumb: !

you are dmping the clutch on a FWD? wow.
i matched your 1/4 times with nothing more than a filter, boost controller, MAF translator, BOV, and Supra SMIC witha bigh hole in it. my tactic has been to feather the clutch and gas, keeping it right at the point before traction breaks...

whats your 60'?

I know HOW to launch, i just wasn't doing it (nerves/anticipation etc). But now that i figured that out ive got it down pretty good, getting only a little bit of wheel spin at the end of first on a wet road, none when its dry. My 60's are usually 2.4-2.5 (crap, yes i know). My 102 trap aint bad tho , and tht was w/o the 3' dp, so hopefully in this wednesday i can lay down some better times...or at least hit 103 :), i'm gonna log a bit more too and see how the car takes to 16-17 psi. I still blow some black smoke at WOT so im not leaning out yet. What was ur 60' on that run? nice btw!

2.292 60' with no suspension but on 235/40/17 nitto 450's. 9.459 1/8th. then top end died cause i was running too rich.

i pus sy footed it thru first and second (not WOT). the way i see it, your better off having traction that going WOT.

if you really wanna learn to launch....deliver pizza in your car for a week like i did (had to give the beater a rest :) )

cant beat awd, dump the clutch at 4000 chirp and your off, hmmm i wonder if thats why my clutch is fried??

if you tracking get the AWD but be prepared to break things.

my friend has a fully built 98GSX and the feeling of dumping the clutch at 5-6k with 400 hp is awesome it will knock your head into the seat.. But he has een through a motor, 2 tranny, 2 quafes, 4 clutches, etc... it is very costly to him

but on my GST basically stock I can't hardly make a 2-3g launch without smoking up the road..

You can still pull a MUCH better 60' in an awd compared to a fwd...without launching so crazy you are breaking parts left and right (this is ignoring the 400hp of course :D )...IMO of course, i wish for awd every damn day
and lets not forget drifting in the rain. I HATE rain, but awd could make rain quite entertaining!

If you have money, and can learn to baby it a little on the launch to save it, track car, AWD.
if you are on a budget, FWD.
good luck

I myself prefer AWD..I have a friend who is doing consisntent 12s with a FWD and not to many mods. I have video if you people would like to see.

Get an AWD. People that constantly break driveline parts just don't know how to drive. My car makes 550 whp and has been 10.62 @130.80 with a best 60' of 1.57 and consistent 1.6's. I run it every week at the track and last week I broke a u-joint, which was the first driveline part I have broken. I simply over powered the material, it broke half way through first gear. Don't dump the clutch in an AWD car, slip it slightly. It takes a little practice but once you get the hang of it the breakage will stop. You should be able to find an early 1G AWD in decent shape for $1500-2500.

Thats actually exactly what im doing (looking for a 1g). I'm going to college this fall, but i will be home most fridays and weekends, and am hoping to keep racing. I've been telling myself i was gonna sell her but never did, maybe now i finally will. WIth almost 100k on it I'm not gonna get too much tho. I do have a question concerning this, should i take most of the mods off my car? I can replace everything but the turbo and the catback with the stock part, since mods rerally dont up the value any...especially if i end up having to let a dealer take it.

You will get more money by selling the parts individually. I would definately take as much as possible off the car.

Cool damn launch's....
did it had sticky tires on it that day at the track...?
For the mods it has, it is doing pretty good times...
Good job.

Thanks for the link.

He was on full slicks that day. And his 60' I "think" is a 2.1 maybe worse or better not really sure. The car was spinning really bad all the way through 3rd. My friend is a really good driver and knows his DSMs in and out. His is tuned great and runs even better. I plan on getting one this year hopefully. You guys and gals should check out the rest of the site its really nice :D
