264 cams with stock cylinder head springs,retainers,ect.

So if I decided to throw on some cams 264/264 or 264/272 would I need to upgrade my springs or anything else in the cylinder head?

None of the "off the shelf" 264's will be a problem on a stock valvetrain as long as you keep the revs under control. Duration has less to do with upgraded springs/retainers than lift, ramp rate and engine RPM's do.

You won't make much power above 6-6.5K on a 16G and stock manifold, even with cams so set the rev limit to 7.2-7.5k and tune the car for it's applicable power band. There's no insurance for not blowing up the internals on a modified car. Best advice, don't run too lean and your motor will thank you for it.

Personally I would get a new set of singles and install them with the stock retainers. Most all stock springs I have tested are just weak from old age.

A new set of BC1100 work well with stock retainers and can be had for less than $100

Larger cams should be accompanied by aftermarket springs. The stock springs are not designed to operate with steeper/more agressive ramp rates or higher lift.
