2G EGR block off plug size

I'm in the middle of getting all my valvetrain for my 2G head and wanted to block off my EGR port and wanted to know what size is the EGR port was so I can get it threaded and also wanted to know what kind of block off bolt or nut i should get

From the top of my head, 1/4 NPT should work rather well

Tap the hole to 1/4" NPT and use a pipe plug. You'll need to open up the hole just a bit before tapping:

I don't know off the top of my head but I would measure the port size and compare it to a drill tap size chart

That's not my pic (mine is welded shut), but you should be able to find that plug just about anywhere. Any parts store will have them, as well as any speed shop or industrial shop that sell AN/JIC fittings. Most places that build engines will keep pipe plugs in stock as well.

Its just a basic 1/4 npt pipe plug

They come in some diffrent "head types" and you can find them in steel, brass, galvinized....

Welding would be the best block off method as long as you have access to a welder and you don't need your emissions. It just lessens the possibility of it leaking that a plug MIGHT cause at some point. Not likely but possible.

i think this is the best way to do it. and this is coming from a guy who makes the a egr block off kit.

Bringing this back up with a slightly newbish question . I'm about to be swapping to a JMF IM and already have my 1/4 NPT plug and Magnus thermal gasket. My question is, can this be drilled and tapped with the engine still in the car? I guess I don't fully understand how the EGR system works so I don't know if this is safe to do. Thanks in advance.

I was messing around with my spare head and from what I can tell, it's just one hole on the IM side that runs through to (4?) exhaust port? Now I will have both the turbo and intake off at the same time. Would I be safe, drilling and tapping this, then blowing compressed air through one side to clear shavings while the head is still attached to the block?

Just want to be sure that no metal can get anywhere important.

Yes, you should be fine with exhaust off.
Once you do the taping, just blow off all what is inside and you should be OK.

Well with my drill, and the length of the 7/16 drill bit required for my 1/4 npt tap, I am unable to drill the head while it is in the bay. Anybody have any other options? I'm thinking JB weld would be a terrible idea and I don't have a welder. Can't I just tap the hole the way it is and find a set screw that size? Why do we have to go to 1/4 NPT?

When i did mine I didn't mess with the ports on the head. I just removed the egr valve and bolted on a 1/4 plate of aluminum. Works just as good

I've had the block off plate for a while now. I am currently installing my JMF with the Magnus heat barrier. That leaves a straight hole from exhaust to the intake gasket. Some say, "it shouldn't hurt" but with it plugged, I know it "won't".

I use a 1/8" NPT plug, and just thread it right in with red loctite without tapping. Works great, just did one yesterday.

Really? Wish I had known that before hand. Care to share where you got the plug? I've looked at my local Lowes, Advance auto, Zettler hardware stores with no luck.

EDIT: I searched Ebay and just bought this pair. Should be good right? I didn't want aluminum for fear that it would strip out easily and not cut any threads.

All of those stores should have them.

That's the correct plug, except you're going to have to wait 2-3 weeks for it to ship from china

The one you bought will work. I use Mcmaster part number 4464K561, but any plug should work really. Shipping from Mcmaster is always really fast if you still want to go that route.

This thread got me thinking about alternatives to plugging at the intake manifold. If you look at this pic taken by Bogus for his bolt removal thread, you'll see the EGR port in cylinder 4.

It seems like it would be possible to plug that port as an alternative. It would certainly be easier to work in that area, but the plug would experience much more heat. Just some food for thought.

I think that would be much harder to drill and tap. Not to mention what would happen if that plug backed out and went through your turbo.

Bringing this thread back for anyone also interested in blocking off the EGR port on the intake side of the cylinder head. I am going to emulate what @turbosax2 did with an 1/8” NPT plug and some red loctite. Reason being is I am running a venom SMIM with a thermal heat gasket. That EGR gas is sure to melt it. I’ll update here with pictures in the next few days with my findings.

If anyone is interested in using the 1/8” NPT method to block their EGR port, it works like a dream. Threaded right in. Mine was a little crooked, but it seals up just fine. I stuffed some vacuum hose down the EGR port on the exhaust side of the cylinder head and shot 100 psi of air through the port. Nothing came out of the plugged end. I’d say she’s good to go. Oh, and I didn’t use any type of sealant or thread locker.
The reason I blocked the port was to prevent from melting my plastic thermal gasket, by the way.
