Well, after my recent purchase and spending the last 3 weeks doing maintenance and slowly trying to start my build as some of you may know..

Well, my freind got started on the Timing belt and Balance Shaft Elmination today and after taking all that apart..

He notices the crank has started to walk... FML!!!

A little background and description of my car

1997 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD.. purchased out of province flew down to pick it up and drove 800 miles to get her home.. Total of 1600miles travelled to get it...

currently has 113k miles original motor...

Any help on where I need to start on looking for parts for a rebuild or engine swap by all means lets here some suggestions..

Thanks, Guys!

Yeah.. from what I have read and that is what most will suggest if not all of you..

Problem is, I have quite a few 2g parts, including.. a recent 2g off 95 or 96 Eprom ECU... exterior parts.. UICP.. along with other things..

I am also scared because some have rebuilt the 7bolts.. and ended up getting crankwalk a second time...

u can pick up a bare 6 bolt block for like $50, used good 6 bolt crank for maybe $50 as well. throw a 2g head on it and viola. i mean if you're gonna be completely rebuilding it anyway, it would be your best route to take.

as far as the UICP, 2g eprom, and what not, it doesnt matter. you can still use them with a 6 bolt.

exterior parts..

You have a 2gb Talon, don't change the exterior please.

As far as your engine goes, I'd pull the pan and see the condition of the bearings. Check the tolerances on the crank and you might be able to just throw new bearings in if money is tight. If no bearings have spun, you might be ok. Drop the trans, unbolt the crank, unbolt the rod caps, get new main and rod bearings and put it all back together. You could probably leave the rods and pistons in the car along with the head.

Your other options are to comlpetely rebuild the 7 bolt, swap in a 6 bolt shortblock, swap in a 6 bolt longblock, or look for a 99 block to get the split thrust bearing design (just like the EVO engines) so you'd still have the crank angle sensor and are a lot less likely to get crankwalk. Best of luck to you. :thumb:

So he removed the crank as well and checked the mains. Installed a gauge and mic'd the end play or just reckoned it was walking due to basic bearing wear?

CRANKWALK best sales pitch for selling 6 bolt parts since the 90's....

You don't need a dial indicator when you can push the crank in and out.

If you have that much play your thrust washer is completely gone or fell out. which you should have noticed clutch slippage before that point.

Just bought the car guy.. barely drove it, I ve been doing maintenance and giving a good tune up along with some light mods.. Hence, the timing belt and balance shaft elminator....

I hear its a better idea that if one decided to rebuild the 7 bolt to use 6 bolt crank bearings...

at this point Id sooner get a 6 bolt block and crankshaft + bearings like someone has mentioned/suggested...

So, what else all do I need to replace?. Where to find these parts for good price,.... As, far as the walking goes... It has slighty moved.. and We have not yet checked the bearings.. will replaces anyway...

Hey Guys,

So, I will need to replace crankshaft and need new bearings obviously...

Im looking at these two so far for my options to get my car running again..
