wow check this out, i did a search and found this but Why does it happen on a fresh rebuild? we were priming the engine and everything was fine, after a few times of trying to start the car this happened...

i guess i'm going with a BS eliminator kit LOL

and is there anything else in particular i should check to make sure it didn't screw up?

you didnt run the car did you ? well you'll have to take the oil pan off anyway since your taking the bs out. I had this happen myself but the bearing came out for the bs inside the motor and rosted my crank :( best of luck

we were trying to start it, i didn't try and start it since it made a noise like it ate something in the timing area

this is crazy tho, i hadn't heard of it before this. i'm always the guinea pig in my group... ### LOL

Overtighten it and fracture the Gear? :notgood:
Accidents like that is why you Deburr Everything!! Not saying that it was the cause.
Just saying I have seen SB chevy Timing gears crack because the Builder used bolts with damaged heads.

Check piston tops for dents. If you turned it over While the gear was cracked, There is a Strong! chance the valves and pistons made contact.
Due to the engine not running, IF they hit there is also the possibilty you got away with out bending valves and maybe just a cpl dents in the pistons.... inspect it Completly :nono:

GoodLuck!

That isn't the timing belt - its the timing belt "B" as the FSM calls it. It simply drives the front balance shaft off the crank, so it wouldn't affect cam timing. No need to pull the head as long as the timing belt hasn't slipped. You're probably ok, and if there is anything else wrong you'll probably figure it out when you do the BSE.

yes thank you for the back up there :D

as we saw it, the timing belt did NOT slip, and it looks correctly aligned but i'll be double checking as we take out the BS.

in response to over tightening anything, we use specs and a torque rench of ANYTHING bolted to the engine, as for some stupid stuff mounted to the Firewall i just tightened up.

as this was my first engine rebuild i wanted to do everything by specs, and so we did
