I am installing my new timing belt, and the marks on the cam sprockets wont line up. The intake is lined up fine, but the exhaust is about a tooth off, when i turn it to line it up, the springs and valves start to compress. Now are those notches on the cams supposed to be in the up position, cuz if the intake cam has is up, and the exhaust one is down, the marks line up, but i thought they both had to be up. Why do u think this is happening? Thanks guys

hey,ur ok.the 4g63 sux with this.u have to bring the exhaust cam back a tooth,it wants to turn towards the front of ur car,but put a socket or a wrench on it and bring it back.its a bi*** but its gotta be done.just line em up.

the timing mark in one tooth above where it need to be lined up, but when i turn it (takes some force), it starts to compress the valves and springs. Is that right or normal? Thanks for the reply though

I had the same problem using wrenches no matter what the cams would not line up even, and yes the dowels were in the proper places.
It all came down to the Gates Timing belt, they are not correct to OEM.
