I can buy a big 16g, but I have questions

Hi all,
My 14b died about a month ago, and I'm saving up for a big 16g.
My car is very mildly modified, with no fuel upgrades (I have the goodies needed to do a fuel pump rewire, but I just haven't had the motivation when the car isn't running).

I do have: an MBC, a K&N, boost gauge, 2g pistons, an act 2100.

I wanted to get the big 16g while I have the "opportunity" to get one. Don't want to buy another 14b that I'm eventually going to replace.

Does this sound like an okay idea? I don't have to run any insane boost levels (anybody know what would be acceptable?) yet anyway.

Thanks for the input
-Jesse

with the higher compression supplied from the 2g pistons, the fact that 1g's run inheriently lean, and the fact that the big 16g flows 100cfm (or more) than the 14b, i would seriously install a fuel pump at the same time. You might beable to run 14lbs of boost on pump gas, but most cars don't start seeing the gains from larger turbo's until after 18psi.
your call, i'd throw it in with a fuel pump and possibly a fuel pressure regulator (you'll be happy you did).
good luck.

Yeah, Eventually I'm definitely going to do any fuel upgrades I can afford. But right now, I can barely afford fuel.

Okay, I just wanted to make sure the 16g wasn't going to flow too much, even at a low psi setting, for the way the car has to be until I make some money.

Eventually, I'd love to turn the boost way up, to take full advantage. But the broken 14b hit me at an unfortunate poor moment.

I just didn't want to get another 14b that I'd replace anyway.

See ifyou can get a turbo with out the center section. You can pick them up for around $400 last time I check. You should have enough money left over for some fuel mods.

As long as boost is kept to a reasonable level he may be able to get buy with a stock rewired pump. But a 100 bucks for the pump is definitely worth it in this case.

Get the 3000GT VR4 pump, and it will flow enough for reasonable
boost levels with the Big 16. With the stock IC, you'll only be able
to tun about 15psi with low single-digit knock counts, but it will be
faster than the 14b at 17psi, because you'll now make power to
redline. You'll like the Big 16, and if you plan on going to a FMIC
someday, you be glad that you stepped up to a good sized turbo
to start with. Oh, I'd advise you to get an SAFC before trying for
15 psi, though.

Aftermarket fuel pump yes
Fuel pressure regulator - not really needed yet
SAFC - get some 550's injectors when using this

Don't run more than 17-18 PSI on pump gas (92octane)
I would buy an EGT gauge before I start playing with the SAFC.

Tell us about your air intake set up (MAS)

I should have read all of your posts before answering. Yes, you can simply swap turbos and be A.O.K. without the addition of any other mod, so long as you keep the boost low. The only way to know just how much boost you can run with no other mods is to have someone with a logger log your car and increase boost until you o2 feedback drops to .9 to be on the safe side. I'd guess that boost level would be around 12 psi, but you won't know without the logger. Given that you can barely afford fuel at the moment, maxing out your setup with the new turbo probably isn't first on your priority list, anyway. When you get the money, get the pump and you'll be able to go a little higher on the boost.
