how do the studs accualy hold the valve cover down?
 im clueless for some reason haha

i just bought a powdercoated valve cover and studs came with them
do you just put the studs in place of the bolts? does it work same way?
nothing else needs done?

Yes, they work just the same as bolts do.

Before you install the valve cover, thread the studs into the head. Then put the gasket in place on the valve cover and install the valve cover. Pretty simple.

I've been running the VC studs for a couple years now. I've noticed that they are much less prone to pulling the threads out of the head, even when torquing them to a higher value.

My roommate and i were just discussing these and wondering if anyone had done this. That answered our question, but where were these purchased at? Or was perhaps a peice of all thread used and you made your own?

Those look real nice. So those are the Moroso oil pan studs for a dsm correct? Stainless?

So those are the Moroso oil pan studs for a dsm correct?
Yup.

I don't think so. They're more like a black oxide looking stud like ARP head studs. I have yet to see any rust or any other type of corrosion on any of mine, and I use them down below for my oil pan as well.

EDIT: Brian beat me to it. :)

Thanks both of you. I'll have to check them out. The black oxide shouldn't rust since it's a protective coating. The just looked a little shiney on your photos :thumb:

I beg to differ on the rust. Now, I don't know how Paul's car was ran/stored since he installed them. My car sits outside on the street and I don't currently have a cover. It gets driven every once in a while. Mine started to rust after a short while of having them on.

I took them out of the oil pan and just left the four corner ones in. This is because removing the gasket material with all of the studs in is a PITA. But leaving the four corners in helps you locate and line up the pan to the block.

And I removed all of the valve cover ones as at least half of them started to look crappy.

But it may depend on your storage/driving conditions.

^^^ That's interesting.

My car has never seen snow, and only sees rain on a rare occasion. Garage kept, of course. That may be a determining factor. Although it's quite humid here in Michigan, and typically anything in my garage with a bit of iron in it will be full of rust within a day or two.

On the two different times that I bought this stud/nut kit, they were different. The studs appear to all be the same, but the nuts were different. The first time that I bought them, they were black, and the second time they were a polished-looking coated finished. It's obvious that Moroso outsources these studs and nuts. So, it's very possible that they purchased a batch of studs that was of lower quality than some of the others. That could explain the rust issue that you're having, Brian.

Brian, were the nuts the same material/coating as the studs? Think it's possible that when the nuts were threaded on that (if you did infact get a lower quality coating on the studs) it caused minute scratches in the coating and allowed them to slowly oxidize?

After talking with my brother, he confirmed we didn't have shiny/glossy/polished pieces. And actually, the first set we received had silver nuts with flat black studs. So we had to get another set.

The studs and the nuts rusted. But I am not sure if it was because of the coating flaking off in minuscule places or not.

You can stop by and take a look at them some time if you'd like. We have 3 sets of them :p

You TEASE! Telling me I can stop by when my poor baby is in the shop AGAIN

That is a but disconcerning that you had to buy 3 sets though and some wern't of the same pieces. :hmm:

Well, we had bought 3 sets as it works out perfectly that those 3 sets will fill 2 cars valve cover and oil pan completely. So both Eric and I wanted to do this initially, and it just happened to work out.

Here's a picture of the beginning of the rust. It did get much worse than this.

Being on the top of the nut like that, I'd say it's a poor quality coating. I personally haven't seen the black oxide coating rust until it's been comprised and I highly doubt that would of happened on the nut head before the sides.

Is that how it happened on all 3 sets you both got?

Like Brian said, I only used 4 of mine on the oil pan just to make installation easier. I replaced the nuts with SS M6 flanged serated nuts though. However, I am on the lookout for similar studs in SS.

alright so i drove my car to the local school and it started leaking AGAIN..
I DID NOT CRACK IT THIS TIME!

alright so lets go threw this..
THIS STUD THING IS CONFUSIN ME

alright so. im gonna sound like an ideot but here we go

I bought a powdercoated valve cover,
he said its from a hyundia sonata, *same valve covers*
and you use STUDS to old it in place..
but i put the bolts back into the middle instead of the studs..
Then the outside holes i put STUDS..
now for the studs .. (this is where im gonna sound like a nood) do i need to put nuts on the top to secure them down to put down the valve cover :|

do i need to put nuts on the top to secure them down to put down the valve cover

If you're asking what I think you are asking, look up a couple of posts at the picture. There is a nut threaded on the stud, and that is how they work.

In regards to the stainless hardware, has anyone had issues with that causing corrosion? I have heard that mixing stainless with cast iron or regular steel can cause corrosion.

Where exactly is it leaking? It could be that you need new spark plug well gaskets, they're missing, or your oil cap seal is leaking. Please post pictures or be more specific.
