Fuel Pump
I was working on a fuel pump this weekend. It's not a DSM but I'm sure people here should be able to tell me something about this. Went to help my sis with her car that's been sitting for 6 months because it couldn't start. It's an 89 Chrysler New Yorker. I found out that the fuel pump was bad. I installed a new pump and now it starts up perfect and runs normal. This is the first time I've really mess with the fuel pump in a car. The thing I'm wondering is that the fuel pump installs into the fuel tank and there is 2 wires, a black and red. The two wires connect to the fuel pump via quick connect female blade connectors. Ok these two wires that connect through blade connectors are just out in the open. I thought that was kinda scary. Could the connection ever cause a small spark when power is fed to the fuel pump? Wouldn't that cause a big fire? Or how about if the gas splashes around all over the two connectors. Wouldn't that cause the power wire and ground wire to spark or ignite or send current through the gas causing it to light up? I got scared thinking about it but that was the way it was when I took it out so I figure it's ok. I still can't stop thinking how it doesn't ignite the gas. Can someone explain. Is there something I don't know.
