OK, Im trying to put on my new timing belt.. and it seems no matter what all the marks wont line up PERFECT.. especially the oil pump sprocket.. its like the dot on the sprocket is always half a tooth past.. or before the mark on the engine... same goes for the crankshaft and silent sprocket..

but when i turn it JUST a touch to make all then ones down there (crank, oil pump, silent shaft pullies) the cam timing marks are like half a tooth off..

what the hell is the deal here?

all belts are factory:dsm: belts.

So it sounds to me like the cams are off. They can be a real pita to get on the money if you do not have the tool to hold the cam gears in place. Also I have seen if you get the tensioner too tight this can also throw things off.
Are you using a shop manual to help you out? They way they expalin some things are sometimes difficult to understand, but it is well worth the money if you are going to be doing these types or repair's to your car. Good luck, let us know what you find wrong.

having a second person hold the cam gears with wrenches helps too. once you have help everything aligns PERFECT

i found if you use the "bulldog clips" (those black springloaded paper clips) mentioned in the Hynes manual to hold the cams in time with the belt. and then line everything up, it's much easier. once everything is lined up then release the pin holding the tensioner. remove the clips and recheck all the marks.

make sure that the engine is in TDC with the # 1 piston before lining up the cams, with the timing marks if not, Kaboom!

first thing is line up the crank! now line up the intake cam and the exhaust cam.when you line up the intake cam it will stay in place but the exhaust cam will go a tooth or so foward and stay there.now put the belt on the intake cam then hold it on the gear with ,well i use vise grips just tight enough to hold it,dont clamp it hard.clamp it at the 3 o clock postion!then put a 17mm wrench on the exhaust gear ,while pulling the belt KINDA tight turn the wrench towards the fire wall a tooth or so till the belt falls on the gear.then put the vise grips on this cam at the 9 0clock postion.now they should be lined up,if not say it needs to go to the right a little to perfectly line up put the 17mm wrench on the right cam gear and just hit the wrench a little to get it lined up.if left put it on the left one.the exhaust cam pulls the belt tight, with the vise grips on and there lined go to the oil pump gear and rear shitty balance shaft.line up the dot and pull the belt down tight around it to the crank pully and around it to the belt tentioner,it will hold in place.
