My friend just got a Buck Grand National and he is always putting down my car. The buick is a turbocharged V6. Its automatic but it puts out a lot of power. Im not sure of the numbers but i know its fast. I have a 95 spyder gs-t 5-speed with just the free mods. My Dad is a used car dealer so he can get any car really; its just a matter of time. Should i ask him to get a 1G awd or 2G awd instead? He really doesnt like the fact that my car is a convertible so it would be ok with him. What mods would i need to buy to beat the V6 turbo?? thanks alot....Matt

If you had the chance to get a GSX go for it. Now what gen is really what you like. 1gs can be made to go fast right off the line really cheap..they also dont look as appealing to the "average" eye then a 2g. Or you could go with a 2g which looks nice..takes just a little more effort to get it where your going..but you always have to deal with the CW issue. I hope this helps some. Personally i am fond to the 2gs but like i said the choice is ultimatly up to you. GL

1G's are better on pretty much any aspect, except for the exaust manifold. My opinion is get a 1G awd and put a big ass turbo like a L2R, do all the supporting mods like :

front mount intercooler, high pressure fuel pump, fpr, s-afc, ported o2 housing or o2 eliminator exaust, 2G exaust manifold and of course do the basic stuff too, i'd suggest a dual stage boost controller (turboxs, those are real cheap), big air filter... etc

and then youll be able to beat ferrari's off the line ;)

1G AWD, with basic upgrades should be able to run mid-low 13's. What do stock GN's run?

There is no replacement for displacement. Bigger engines that can run bigger turbos will make more power. A 3.8L turbo vs. a 2.0L turbo. The GN has almost twice the displacement. A fully modded DSM might have a chance against a mildly modified GN.

BTW, anyone have good dyno #s and 1/4 mile times w/ the L2R or L3R yet?

well thats simple.....buy a grand national to start with, you're gonna have one hell of a time competing with a GN. Those cars are one bad azz machine....good luck:)

high 13s bone stock and mid 12's with very minor mods....like I said, good luck...theres a guy at my work that is running a street legal 10 second GN with only turbo work (hasnt even touched the motor yet)

LOL
I found out the hard way.. My Talon is a low 12 sec car and I got my ass handed to me on a platter, with parsley and some bullshit lettuce. If he has it modded and its pushing big power.. good luck they 'aint slow.
GN's/Turb Buicks get a big:thumb: from me.
[edit this GN I raced was modded with turb upgrades 3.5 inch exhaust etc etc (10 sec car)]

Them turbo GN's were the fastest production car that gm made that year. They are even faster then that year's corvette model, and we know the corvette is the flagship of sports performance for gm, thats one reason they had to kill that turbo. Cant have a car outperforming the corvette. So thats saying alot, and them turbo GN's still cost a pretty penny if your out to buy one. I want to buy one, but they are rare and you have to find a owner dumb enough to want to sell theres.

So who says domestic's cant build decent turbo cars!

Tell em to race on STREET tires. In the rain. When the weather is under 30 degrees. :thumb:

I would say that the best way to beat a GN, GNX, Typhoon, or Cyclone is to let all of the air out of their tires right before the race.

My Grand National ran 13.1 @107 on street tires with these mods: K&N, test pipe, Hooker exhaust, chip. Crappy 60 ft time to boot. Doesn't take much $ to make them fly.

If I remember right the Buick GN lied about its initial HP numbers. It did this so it wouldn't directly compete with "real sports cars" at the time.

With slicks people have run 13.3's with just the boost turned up. Your friend has a NICE car. The Grand National is probably my favorite domestic.

Challenge him to a race that involves a corner. Or preferably several corners. And learn to drive - really learn to drive. You can get your car into a comparable league by modifying it, but it's the driver that really counts.
