I have been thinking about changing the stock downpipe to an aftermarket one but the only issue I am having is that every one that I have seen replaces the cat. I want to keep the cat(even though I know it kills HP) because I already got in trouble once for taking it off. Any suggestions??

WTF ................................................ WTF umm why not just replace the downpipe and umm keep the cat then?
 
because every downpipe ive seen is for off road use only and eliminates the cat
 
I use a Buschur Racing 2.5" SS Mandrel Bent DP. You can use a cat with it. Don't forget to attach the grounding strap for the O2 Sensors. Just get a Self-Tapping Sheet Metal screw, and drill it through the pipe. Works like a champ.

Get a high flow cat and put it on a shorty RRE or Buscher down pipe. Aftermarket High Flow cats work better then our factory ones so you wont have any emission issues.

I dont know why you would get a CEL by not having a cat. Even if you did remove the rear O2 that still doesnt cause a cel that I have ever seen on 2g.

This pipe would be a good example of DP only , see how the end of the pipe bottles necks back down for the cat to bolt up ? Just keep that in mind. Also i would email guy to make 100% sure. There are lots of pipes out there that keep stock cat.

it bottles down to attatch to the stock exhaust because it eliminates the cat

If you dont have a cat the second O2 sensor gets an the wrong reading and throws a CEL, happened to me and many others and even though I doubted it the VFAQ resistor fix worked.

I believe there aro no legal downpipes, all of them are for "off road use only." I bought a dp and had it cut and flanged for a high flow, OBDII compliant Magnaflow.

Now legal and passing emissions are 2 different things. Depending on your tune, any car can be made to pass emissions. But if your part is not CARB excempt, it will not legally pass the visual part of your smog test. No cat converter is considered highly illegal and will not pass the sniffer.

Our cars have a heat shield on top of the exhaust manifold that hides the downpipe effectively.... :sneaky:

Will not pass the visual true but as far as the sniffer goes I passed w/out a converter in Spokane,Wa. I couldn't believe it either so I kept the emission result sheet for proof.
