Thinking of mounting my gauges differently

I was kicking around the idea of putting three gauges where the factory hvac controls sit and relocating those to under the radio. I would use a different control type, probably out of a new eclipse or a montaro, because they are single DIN sized units. Here's a quick photoshop of what it might look like when done. I figure it'll cost around $200 to do, local dealer says the unit from a montaro is 125, then the cable will need to be modded for the extra length, and a little rewiring. Any thoughts? Or better yet anyone tried something like this before?

I was going to do that in mine. But after looking at it with the dash taken apart. I decided that I was too lazy and just put them where the stereo was. But I still think it would look pretty good like that. I still might do one like that. I need a fuel pressure gauge but have nowhere to mount it. If you do it get some pictures up, I'd like to see it done.

I like my gauges where I can see them without looking down. When at the track it is hard enough to pay attention to RPM's, EGT's and Boost and look at the track. Looks gcool but not practical im my opinion.

I personaly think that they're not out of sight in that position. Just a glance away, no more than looking at the dash. Next time you drive your car, just glance over at the hvac controls, they're at agood height and angle. Again just my opinion.

another option is to make a dual guage pod outta fiberglass that angles towards you and mount it where the center ac vents are.......very clean and easy to see......ill get pics of it up soon

I've seen the vent mounts...but living in Florida, I really don't car to lose any air flow from the air conditioner. After all, it's a daily driver.

that would be cool.. esp. the idea of moving the hvac controls.. however, i personally wouldn't put gauges i always have to look at over at your proposed location.. because of the same reasons Ed mentioned..

here's my buddies ( 90tsi ) setup on his 1g.

I like the Idea an all, and it looks good. I just dont like the idea of taking your eye of the road. your eye may be one those gauges for a second or two, which is a long time when you are going fast IMHO

That looks very cool! I don't think the location would be bad for a daily driver. It's no farther then looking down at the speedo. If you race a lot and need to watch the gauges and the track closely at the same time it may not be so practical. But for a daily driver it should work fine.

I have my gauges in the center vent and they are not difficult to see at all.

Consider a pod on TOP of the center console. Yeah. On top of the dash, going around.

That's by far a superior placement.

I thought about that too, but I like the way the dash flows stock, and the gauges I'm planning on getting are 60mm so they are rather big. I don't think it would look good. I'll look into it more, but I just see it being too big and bulky and not flowing with the lines of the dash. Yes function follows form with more, for the most part.
