I had been thinking about a new front for the car to allow better air flow to the rad and fmic. Maine roads suck, so i didn't want to go fiberglass. Here is my sollution. Almost direct bolt on. Only a few minor mods required. Bumper is from a Subaru Impreza. Picked it up from the junk yard for $25

what year impreza was that bumper from? Looks ok in my opnion but I would do some work on it anyways. This means that if it is an close match , frontbompers for impreza might be used on a 1g as well.THat means more options for aftermarket parts as well.

Let us know how much it differed from the DSm in terms of insatallation and so on?

Here are some more pics. Click on them to enlarge.

The holes outlined in red need to be trimmed in the back to clear the bumper support, which i didn't do because i was impatient. Thats why it bows a bit under the lights. And the bar that goes in the big opening needs to be cut out as well. The bumper is from a 97-2000 impreza

Hmm I duno. If you do something with the top holes it might look better. I can't decide how well I like it. Now slap a carbon lip on it .

What year impreza was that off of? I need a new front bumper, and that looks really good!!:thumb:

I, as well as many others would like to know what kind of modification it took to install this bumper. Did you have to drill new holes in the impreza bumper, Etc? I would really appreciate a how to, or some kind of write up about it. thanks alot!

If its not that much you might find some bodykit or front lip you like and install it.

Here is more info on that bumper to the specifics..

thats an USDM 97-01 impreza L bumper and also 98 impreza RS bumper

the 2.5RS bumper has the huge foglight holes, which obviously that does not have.

In the pics above, you will see circled in red the places that need to be trimmed on the back side of the bumper to clear the bumper support. Also, (not circled) is the large opening in front. There is normally a bar that goes across that opening. (see below) I cut that out to open it up for better airflow to the IC and radiator. It does need to be trimmed back to clear the bumper support as well. Just go slow. Trim a little and re-test fit, etc, until you are happy.

I didn't drill new holes on the bumper cover. I drilled them in the bumper support. I used sheet metal screws with washers under them to secure the bumper. The only stock hole in the bumper support i used is the one in the middle. Now when you go to attach the bumper to the fenders, if your stock bolts didn't break taking them out, you are in good shape. The Impreza bumper has oblong holes for mounting, and will work with the stock bolt. If your bolts broke, grab your drill, and go to town drilling out the broken bolt. You can retap it after its out, or just go with a larger bit so you can use a bolt and nut.

Both my stock bolts broke, so i found it a good time to stick on my Z3 fenders. I lined up the bumper, drilled a hole in the fender and bolted it up.

Hey Tom what kind of seats are in your car?

I don't recall the name of them, but I got them on ebay for $200 shipped. My stock leather seats where trashed when i bought it and needed a cheap qick fix. I plan on putting in a cross bar behind the seats with some 4 or 5 point harnesses this spring.

Thread res....
Just a heads up if anyone is thinking about doing this, you MUST use the front bumper from the base model impreza. The 2.5 RS bumper doesn't fit properly.I can take a few pics if anyone wants but you have to cut a TON off of the bumper for it to fit. I think I might stick with it just to keep the car looking different but I am going to have to cut more off and then fiberglass in some other stuff.
So, once again, if it has the huge square fog light holes, it will take a LOT of cutting to fit, and the line of the fender doesn't follow the same curve.

I am wondering if this bumper also lines up with some of the plastic wheel well holes. I like this mod, but got me disgusted having to look up Subaru parts and forums for pictures of the lip. Lol
