I have some new Eclipse SC8362 6.5" component two ways (got a great price) for the front of my '91. I've pulled the old speaker and adaptor plate out and discovered that the stock grill covers a small unconcentric 4" hole in the door panel with the old 5.25" speaker fireing through about half of the hole. This explains why the fronts always seemed muffled. It seems stupid to use quality speakers and then cover them up with the door panel.
It looks like I have two options, if I just make an adaptor plate to center the mid-woof in the sheet metal I'll have to cut much higher in the door panel past the carpeting and into the plastic to match the speaker placement. I don't know how I'd attach new grills since the speaker would be some distance behind the door panel and after cutting I'd have no way to ever go back. The other choice is to center the speaker in the carpeted area and top mount them with some sort of adaptor made up to fill the gap from the door to the door panel to seal and support the new speaker.

It seems like most people have just made an adaptor to center the speaker in the sheet metal and leave the stock grills in place. How much SQ are I going to lose that way if I at least open the door panel up to match the stock grill opening? (Since the grill won't align with the speaker centerline.)

Any comments or other ideas?

personally im gonna be makin custom enclosures for the front wen i get the money for some new fronts. If u did put them in, u'd definetly want to open up the grill so the sound can get out. think about it. if u put your hand over the whole grill, all u hear is some bad soundin bass. this is wat is happenin if u dont open up the grill. once u do u will hear a lot better spectrum. And nice choice on the components. how much u pay?
theres a store up here thats sellin them for 400 canadian but i dont got the do right now

I figured as much but was looking for ideas on what people have done to back the drivers up if they top mount them or how they got them lower to line up with the grill openings. The newer sc8262 set I got for $110 and I also got some 8062 (earler this year version with 3/4" tweeter vs the 1" for putting in the rear) for $100. I think those were good deals since the local shops wanted $350 for the 8062's. Both sets were unused in the boxes. i had listened to the 8062'a a while back and they sounded really nice but there was no way I was going to spend $700 on speakers so I watched ebay until I saw a deal and jumped on it.
Now I just need to get them installed.

Thanks for the suggestion. My big feet rule that solution out.
This weekend I'm going to spend some more time measuring and calculating clearances to see what I have to do to center the driver behind the existing grill opening. Hopefully I wont have to cut any metal in the door. I'm also going to look at how big I would need to cut the door panel if I want to top mount the driver and use it's grill. If I'm lucky I won't have to cut larger than the mounting studs for the stock grill so I could put them back on later when and if I get rid of this car.
