I have some new Eclipse SC8362 6.5" component two ways (got a great price) for the front of my '91. I've pulled the old speaker and adaptor plate out and discovered that the stock grill covers a small unconcentric 4" hole in the door panel with the old 5.25" speaker fireing through about half of the hole. This explains why the fronts always seemed muffled. It seems stupid to use quality speakers and then cover them up with the door panel.
It looks like I have two options, if I just make an adaptor plate to center the mid-woof in the sheet metal I'll have to cut much higher in the door panel past the carpeting and into the plastic to match the speaker placement. I don't know how I'd attach new grills since the speaker would be some distance behind the door panel and after cutting I'd have no way to ever go back. The other choice is to center the speaker in the carpeted area and top mount them with some sort of adaptor made up to fill the gap from the door to the door panel to seal and support the new speaker.
It seems like most people have just made an adaptor to center the speaker in the sheet metal and leave the stock grills in place. How much SQ are I going to lose that way if I at least open the door panel up to match the stock grill opening? (Since the grill won't align with the speaker centerline.)
Any comments or other ideas?
