I'm sure everyone will agree, the tall 1G shift knob sucks. That thing is friggin' huge. However, the 'tuner' shops only seem to carry cheesy universal shift knobs that attach with a set screw. Well, after putting the giant chrome skull in my 4x4 mud truck, I found out that you can't get the set screw tight enough without stripping it out. Nothing is quite as bad as your shift knob coming off after every 1-2 power shift, especially when you're sunk up to the top of 38.5" Super Swampers and trying to dig your way out... I quickly swapped that out for a Hurst T-handle that doesn't budge, but you can bet the threads don't match up to our DSM shifters. By a stroke of fortune, I found this shift knob in a totalled '94 Talon with a 1.8 and a 5 speed. Surely this isn't an OEM shift knob, but it sure looks like it could be. What in the world is it out of? Fits great on my '91, and feels awesome. Not sure if it will make any difference as the tranny is out at the moment, but wow... Don't mind the dust, car has been sitting for a while now.

Short Shift Knob

Short Knob vs. Stock Knob

It's either a 2G shift knob or a late 1G knob. If it seems to kinda twist toward the top then it's a late 1G knob, if it's pretty symmetrical then it's the 2G knob.

my late 1G looked damn similar, awesome knob by the way. i made one for my 91 AWD from an MX3 shift knob, modified to fit. i LOVED it! nice and short, and decently built too. probably the nicest knob i've had yet & was cheap as hell too!

my 2g knob wasnt stitched and looked exactly like that one except mine is dark grey. i opted to get rid of it for an evo 8 shift knob tho. i only had to hike up the boot a bit with a zip tie undeneathe and its the best shift knob i have ever used. i <3 it LOL.

I'd say it's neither. I all late 1G and 2G knobs I have seen are leather stitched.

Probably off of a nissan/honda/toyota/whatever other brand has the same thread size.

Then you obviously haven't seen very many. If the car came with leather then the knob was usually leather wrapped. It was also an option on GS and up trim levels. However if you ever see an RS knob, that's what it looks like. My 2G knob was leather wrapped but the leather rotted or something so I cut it off and it looked exactly like that underneath.

yeah its a 2g knob..i used to have one on mine til i bought one with a set screw...it came off a few times because of the shape of the shifter on dsm's but i took the little screw on thing that covers up the screws off and it goes down far enough now to be tight

That is deffinetly a late 92-94 1G knob. My old eclipse has the same one. Now I use a Honda Del Sol knob. It is even smaller than the one you have.

Mine is black and stitched. I wonder if that knob only comes in cars with leather and sport packages? BTW, where'd you find an Evo 8 knob?

Like I just said above I believe that is right. If the car came with leather then the knob was wrapped in it too. You can buy an Evo 8 knob from the Mitsu dealer but from what I remember they are not cheap. I personally don't like the stock Evo8 knob but do favor brushed aluminum one they offer as an option.

OMG I'll admit when I'm wrong

I have a 93 GS with cloth interior and I have that same knob.

i got my evo 8 knob for free actually. long story short. a friend of mine who has a lancer oz bought it off some kid who owns an evo. jason tried it in his car but it left like a 3 inch gap between the knob and the boot and he didnt want to bother taking the console apart to hike the boot up so one night he gave it to me and asked if it would fit on my car. we tried it and it did so i told him id buy it from him but because he has money coming out his a$$ he told me to just have it.

the stock 2g and late model 1G's appear similar, but if i'm not mistaken, they are NOT the same

Just like it says in Post #8. The 2G knob is about an inch shorter.

Thats the same one in my car......so I would go with the 92-94 style......
