I'm trying to find out the diferences between the 420a in the DSM's and the 2.0 DOHC motor in the Neon's. Everything included such as ECU's, injectors, cams. intakes, throttle bodies, blah, blah, blah.

The story goes as such:
A friend of mine is planning on buying a DOHC NEON to build this winter and has already started mouthin'. I was just wondering if I could cheat and use my DSM knowledge and parts and build one of those ugly little buggers to be faster.

Thanks,
Alice

Essentially the blocks of the two motors are the same. The head is reversed in the Neon compared to the Eclipse/Talon twins, so parts cannot be interchanged. The cams are different as they are faced in the opposite direction ( reversed head ). I am pretty sure that the ECU etc is different also.

Man, that's a JIP. So much for my ported 1G turbo head and cams that I have laying around. I thought I'd be able to smoke the dude, easily. I guess I have to do some more homework.

The 1g head is completely different from the non-turbo 2g head.

The internals of the two cylinder heads do share alot of common parts however. The followers are the same, the lifters are the same, spring retainers, keepers/locks, and springs can all be swapped around. The cam gears are the same for the 2.0L neon and non-turbo eclipse, as well as the 2.4L chrysler engine. The valves are different as are the cams but for the most part everything else can be interchanged with little to no effort.

The engine platforms as well as the upgrade paths are all similar between the neon and the non-turbo eclipse. It's just a matter of fitting the right part on the right car. Getting out from under the hood you can expect to see alot of differences. Suspension on my neon sucks in comparison to my eclipse. However, the neon is alot lighter and feels lighter too. If speed is all you're interested in I would recomend the neon. If you're looking for a better touring car with near comperable speed then go for the eclipse. The suspension is alot tighter, it looks better, it rides better, and you won't get made fun of as much with the eclipse, unless it's auto, then you're screwed.

u guys gotta be kidding.there is no way in hell a neon is faster then a dsm.i smoke them on a daily basis with my 1g eclipse n/t with 135,800 miles on it.i just have a kn and exhaust.i blow by em in first gear.

I ran a 15.660 in my neon at Rockingham, NC. That's with only head work, cam, computer, and clutch. No cold air intake, no aftermarket exhaust, no additional bolt ons. That was the first day it was legal to drive on the road, breaking in the clutch consisted of... the 1.5-2 hour drive to the track, and it was on the stock 165R13 tires with only 20-25psi. Truly challenged in comparison to many other 2gnt's with UDP, cold air, cat-backs, and the like.

I will line up next to ANY 2gnt and hang with them if not take them as the car sits now. I can refer you to half of the moderators, wisemen, and alot of general moderators on this board if my word is not sufficient for you.

And we're talking 2.0 DOHC Neon, not the 2.0 SOHC Neon.

And while we're bench racing, a stock sohc Neon should take a stock 1g 2.0 n/t.

HOLY @#$%, and my nissan w/ 109 hp is faster than the SOHC neon. guess my nissan is faster than my 1G N/T.

the 1G 2.0 is faster than the SOHC neon and is pretty much even with the DOHC, not the R/T though. my friend had a DOHC neon, killed the engine and had it replaced with an R/T engine(same engine diff final ratio, also actual car had suspention diff.). that car was quick after that.

Well, I'll leave the bench racing to someone else. But here's the facts.
2.0L neon, SOHC, 132Hp@6000RPM
-gear ratios
--1st 3.54, 2nd 2.12, 3rd 1.36, 4th 1.03, 5th 0.72 w/final drive of 3.55
2.0L neon, DOHC, 150hp@6800RPM
-gear ratios identical gearing with a final drive of 3.94

The 2dr and 4dr expresso DOHC, 2dr and 4dr R/T DOHC, 4 door ACR SOHC, and 2door ACR DOHC all have the same transmission gearing and final drive with the exception of the last ACRs which have a 0.81 final drive.

The DOHC engine does not change internally from a low model with DOHC compared to an RT. The RT will have a suspension package and maybe a computer but swapping out the engines alone, if both engines are in identical condition, will not yield any improvements. The fact that the engine let go may be proof enough that it was dying and could not perform as well as it could have.

Outside of the stats that I found, the only thing not in the picture is horsepower to weight ratio and I feel pretty sure a 1g is heavier than a neon. As for the Nissan against a SOHC, everything else I have to say would be bench racing so I'll park it here.
