Lets talk Ebay FMIC. Especially if you have one.

I have read a couple of threads on ebay intercoolers but just wondering which ones out there that are actually good? Allot of them have something that goes like this

"Good for up to 500bhp(I have seen from 350-600). all our intercooler has been tested to withstand more then 80psi pressure and it has very small pressure drop across the end tanks, at 15psi inlet the out let has 14.8psi that means it has only 0.2 psi pressure drop ,compare to many other intercoolers it is an excellent figure (some intercooler has 1-2psi pressure drop) also at the same condition, the temperature has drop from 120 degree to 28 degree ( and it is an excellent figure for efficiency"

Is the above statement just a bunch of bs or true? Has anyone tried the Megan racing FMIC? I think it's crazy to spend 700+ on a core and piping. I really don't care about name brands I just want it to work. Kinda like a Dave Brode part or Megan Racing or Johnny Racecar FMIC all cheap but effective with great quality. Here are just a couple of FMIC I'm talking about that look good but do they perform and will they last? Please chime in if you have a ebay FMIC or had one especially if it worked or did not work well for you. thanks

Megan FMIC

No name brand but has the standard psi and efficiency spill

Street Imports FMIC

XOXO Core but has good feedback on the core

Well, here is my respond. The piping does get incredibly hot after a few runs at the track. Though I can't say how this is affecting me due to having bigger problems like traction. First time at the track with slicks on, my hood opens (forgot to lock the dam pins). Just installed a new windshield and now i'm considering of maybe jetcoating the pipes or replacing them.
Pipes going to get hot regardless but they get hot pretty quick, what does help is pop the hood open letting it cool down after every run or if you are like me, turn the fan on in the on key position and let it cooool haha.

Btw, my turbo is a GT30R @ 25psi

PTE 50 trim, 76 trim hot side. 22 psi on 91 cali pump.

So far I havnt had a problem. To be quite honest I just go with DSMLink and if my knock light doesn't go on I don't really worry about anything. I guess I will double check so everyone can have some reassurance. I did a few hard pulls with this thing and never once did I get a warning about too much knock. On my old Greddy 24R after a few runs i would get excessive knock warning. These were both runs at night. I guess this doesn't really tell us much and help the discussion, but that's all I can offer. 42lb/min is what I'm seeing. Stock motor.

Just because the pipes are hot really doesnt say much. I can understand people are paranoid at this kit, becasue its off ebay, but more then that, its from SSAUTOCHROME, a company the DSM Community has bashed for years for making faulty bullshit. However.
This is an Intercooler, I cant see the Inner-core being crappy.. the only real problem i can imagine is maybe a weld or two breaking. Regardless, pipes on any turbo car are going to be hot. If there is less then 5 counts of knock, and the water tempature stays below 205degrees, thats all that matters. then the intercooler is doing its job.

(reason being water tempature staying below 205 is that anything over that will cause your ecu to pull timing)

took a few minutes while i was in the garage to test fit the upper intercooler piping and throttle body elbow. the bolt at the bottom right of the throttle body does not fit through the throttle body elbow because the tubing gets in the way. i am thinking of notching it. have the 2g guys experienced this? i also put a home depot coupler in place of the missing one in the kit. i noticed that the home depot couplers only stay on if you have beeded ends on the pipe, and these do. all that is left after i get this part done is the mounting of the side tabs, and painting the piping black, to shiny for my sleeper taste...LOL;)
anyway, here are the pics:

I have had my FMIC for over a month now without a single problem. I am running a FP Red without any type of heatsoak. I did 6 pulls with it and pulled over to feel my endtanks and they were pretty cold. Piping will always be somewhat warm considering how close to the motor it is.

I see your running DSMLink also.. and have a wideband, I already trusted my kit, but hearing this from you just gave me just a lil bit more reassurance. thanks. Care to post a few of your DSMLink logs?

91-gsx.. good job so far with the 1g install, it's coming along nicely, hopefully it will be done by the next Bay Area DSM meet, you know how those go ROFL so I guess you have 2 years haha.

When my brother in law ordered his kit a couple weeks ago, he got no email or anything, but the kit showed up 5 days later by fed ex. You have to sign for it too, so make sure someone is home if possable. :talon:

Mine arrived in about 10 days... only because eventually they sent me a tracking and I found it had arrived in town 4 days earlier and it needed to be signed for. I wasnt home to sign for it but on the 4th day of no signing they just left it at my doorstep.

And yes I emailed like 5 different emails for them with no response.

Just a tech update for you guys. On my previous FMIC I had logged 128*F intake temperatures and 208* coolant tempature. Surprisingly enough, I grabbed my logger today (about 65*F out) and the intake temps were 95* and 195* accordingly. No changes to my cooling system at all and now I'm holding those temperatures under cruise and WOT conditions. I also did a couple pulls on the highway and when I got back to the parking lot, the passenger side of the FMIC was luke warm and the driver's side (outlet side) was nice and cold. Safe to say, I don't have any problems with this FMIC kit yet. Funny how the FMIC got larger, but the coolant temps got lower.

Just an update. You guys are right and I now feel like a moron. I went out yesterday and did about 4 3rd gear pulls in a row and pulled over. Felt the piping and it was pretty hot. Grabbed the actual core outlet and it was nice and cool so it looks like the heat is coming from the engine bay and is just heating up the piping. Thanks again guys.:thumb:

No email. No tracking or anything. It just showed up about 7 days after I sent the money. I wasn't home which sucked but fed ex left a number, so I called it and asked if they could deliver it after 5 pm. So I got it the next day. And everything in the kit looks good.

Intake Temps are measured at the MAS, and Generally a larger FMIC core allows more airflow to the radiator.

See, that's what I was thinking, but I figured I'd post the numbers anyway. However, I can't understand how a larger FMIC would allow more air flow versus a smaller core. Care to iterate?

does any one have a godspeed intercooler that is an "L" type? i need to get some intercooler pipes for it. where?how much? i would go to a muffler shop but i want mine mandrel bent. let me know
