Belt Replacement....

ok I used the search button but I didn't find what i was looking for, so here goes. the Talon im looking at might need the belts done, the owner said they where done about 2000 miles ago, but if he doesn't have records of the belt change im gonna do them again. i have NEVER done the timing belts on a DSM or any car for that matter, so heres my question: do you guys think it is possible for me to undertake the belt change myself? i have decent mechanical knowledge ( i build engine and have always worked on my cars myself ) and a basic set of hand tools. and also what else do i need to replace while i do the belts.

To do it properly?
-Timing Belt
-Timing Belt Tensioner Pulley
-Idler Pulley
-Timing Belt Tensioner
-balance shaft belt (unless you plan on eliminating them)
-power steering belt
-alternator belt
-A/C belt (if you have ac)

It's a good idea to change the water pump while you're in there as well.

I say go for it, you won't learn otherwise. Since you have searched, I'm sure you have read posts where even shops do the job wrong. Perform the task with the TSB timing belt instructions and if you can, a knowledgable local DSMer to be on hand to answer questions or lend a hand. One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is aligning the timing marks. By 'lined up' they mean exactly lined up with a straight edge, not just 'close'.

yes, we cant stress "EXACTLY straight" enough, Close will not cut it, it can couse your valves to stick open just a little bit at the wrong time = not starting or worse, bent valves. So just take your time, read directions, and youll be A-O K

so about how much will all these parts cost me ( if I were to replace EVERYTHING ) and how hard is it to install a Balance shaft eliminator kit?

Replacing all your belts including timing belt, tensioner, and the BSE kit will probably run no more than 400 dollars.

I contemplated doing this also at first but then after some time I thought better against it. I was estimated a price for all the belts and labor at around $550 and I'm more than likely going to take that. Why you ask. For one big reason, a gurantee. I don't want to hone my mechanical skills on my daily driven car, I'll let someone do it and if they screw it up they can fix it free of charge.

Yeah the only bad thing is IF they indeed "screw it up"...your engine will be toast and your daily driven vehicle won't be driven for a LONG time. $550 for a timing belt change is ludicrous IMHO...

I got all my t-belt parts, INCLUDING the B-shaft eliminator kit from a Mitsu dealer for 320CAD.

There is a special tool you will need that will make the job go a lot smoother. Ask around and see if you can borrow it from another DSMer in your area. I didn't know anyone else so I wound up spending the extra money to get it. It is for adjusting/loosening the timing belt tensioner. My dad and I were able to get through it without too many problems, just follow the instructions.
