I had been dsmless since August of 2008 and really didn't have the funds for a new project. A friend called me up and asked if I wanted a 1990 TSI AWD, of course I said yes, but there wasn't money for such a thing. Then he dropped the good news, it was just a shell and it was free.

Had a friend load up his trailer and we journeyed to Ohio to pick up the new shell.

I was living in an apartment at the time and had no place to work on the car, another friend offerred his garage for me to use. Fortunately he understood this wasn't going to be a short stay as I collected parts. This is essentially what I started out with.

Fortunately I had quite a few parts left over from my previous dsms. I also have a good amount of friends in the dsm community who blessed me with free and discounted parts.

There were alot of setbacks, from an oil pump stuffed with some kind of white lithium greese from the previous owner causing a no oil pressure issues, a broken fuel line from the sending unit, an auto rear end instead of a manual, a n/t engine harness, and that's not to mention trying to source every bolt, nut, washer, spacer, etc. to make a running car out of a shell. But, it all started coming together. BTW, the motor was a stock longblock that I nabbed for 300 bucks, most expensive part of the build, including that freshly built transmission which was built with all the goodies. Talk about good friends.

June 2009

The car finally came home under it's own power. The car bucked at 4500 rpms due to a faulty ecu, boost leaked like crazy, had a honda civic radiator which overheated, and ran on an open downpipe. But, it ran!

9.jpg

10.jpg

October 2009

I ended up with a borrowed ecu, megan racing catback, and did a whole lot of boost leak fixing over those last few months. I did get to take it to the 2009 DSM/Evo Shootout, first time taking a DSM. I was finally confident in taking the car to the track for the first time. Unfortunately the Talon would begin it's long line of track breakage! I set a tentative goal of hitting 13's, which I accomplished on the first run while missing 4th gear. This was on 14 psi with the 14b.

Mod List at the Time:
14b w/7cm ported hotside
SBR 1st gen Cast manifold, ported heavily
2.5" O2 housing
3" Punishment DP, 3" test pipe, 3" Megan Racing Catback
Hacked 1g maf
Hard intake pipe w/K&N filter
Unknown fuel pump (Later replaced w/Walbro 255hp)
Built trans w/welded center diff, double syncro's etc.
ACT 2600 (old style)
ARP's

1.811 60ft
8.238 1/8 ET
86.20 1/8 mph
13.614 1/4 ET
93.37 1/4 mph

I missed 4th on the 2nd pass as well, unfortunately the bucking from the missed gear caused an interesting failure. I had made the unfortunate decision of running a mechanical oil pressure gauge. The line broke spraying oil all over the track and spinning a bearing in my bottom end.

This is the engine bay after my track visit, it's humerous how everything looks fine on the surface when a motor has internal issues.

11.jpg

Same buddy who drove his pickup and trailer down to Ohio offered to help me rebuild the engine. I decided on ITM 2g pistons, 1g rods w/arps, and all new gaskets/bearings.

12.jpg

As from the beginning funds were very tight and putting this thing back together took alot of time and patience.

Mid April 2010

Finally brought the car home again and started the break-in process. We discovered a nasty hole/crack in my SBR manifold I had been given so we swapped in a 2g manifold during the engine rebuild process.

13.jpg

14.jpg

June 2010

Got the car back to the track after the break-in process, changes included the rebuilt engine, DSMLink V2.5 and a 2g maf. Boost at 15 psi.

60ft' 1.8039
1/8th ET 8.3505
1/8th MPH 83.48
1/4 ET 13.1192
1/4 MPH 104.53

Both this run and the one last year was on 93 octane fuel. Two days after the 13.1 I decided to add some 110 to the tank, turn up the boost, and go to an Import showdown at US-131 Dragstrip. I did not best my time despite turning the boost up to 18psi. Reason being? I could not shift the car into 2nd the entire day. Absolutely refused to go into 2nd gear. Still took 3rd in the Forced Induction Sport Class, best of 13.3 with 7 cars in the class and being the closest to stock there!

The shifting issue was puzzling at first, I knew I had an awesome trans, and it wasn't grinding, it was almost as if I couldn't pull the shifter back far enough to get it to engage 2nd. Finally discovered one of my shift cables had bent. A new set was ordered.

July 2010

Installed an AEM Wideband, FIC 1050cc injectors, and E-85 fuel! And got a freebie Carbon Fiber hood.

And decided it was time to hit that 12....alas not to be.

DSM/EVO Shootout 2010!

Got a 4 bolt rear swapped into the talon after having wrecked the old 3 bolt rear. I also added an Extrude Honed 1g Intake manifold I stole from a seller here on DSMTuners, thanks again, can't remember the name. Decided to go all out at the shootout and run the car. I wasn't sure what to expect, all I wanted was a 12.999. Here's an excerpt from my thread on another forum with what happened.

I decided not to do anything further to the car, I even decided to not even bother removing the rear or passenger seats or any other "weight" from the car. Boost was set at 21psi. I got to the track at 9am and went through tech and got in the lanes. It was already easily 80+ degrees out. I lined up next to a red Laser that I'm pretty sure ran in our class. Just figuring we were qualifying or testing anyways I tried to get some practice with the pro tree, still need alot of practice with that! I was a little excited and nervous and ended up pretty much just dropping the clutch on the launch instead of slipping it out properly, it bogged for a second then just spun the tires as I shifted to 2nd and finished the pass. Honestly, I thought it felt a little slow overall, figured I may have gotten lucky and hit 12's at least. I was stoked when I pulled up the ticket booth and got my slip....12.58 @ 110!!!! With a 1.88 60 ft!

I decided to make as few passes as possible and decided to wait until eliminations for another pass. I lined up against the STM red 1ga car and figured I might as well give it my best effort, I slipped the clutch out with the happy pedal down and just spun the crap out of all 4 tires, no traction whatsoever. I watched as he ran away from me but finished the pass and went to get my ticket. 12.55 @ 110.8! With a 1.945 60 ft!

Lesson to be learned, even when you're worried about track prep, lower the tire pressure more, I usually have them at about 25psi at the track, which netted me some 1.7's at Milan and Martin, I put them at 28 front and 25 rear figuring Norwalk's track prep was going to be better. I was wrong and paid the price with the ugly 60 fts. For the record everyone seems to be mentioning poor 60 fts throughout the day, the heat may have also played a big factor and the rain from the day prior. I also was told my stock suspension isn't cutting it, with quotes such as "your rear bumper was touching the ground" and "your cars nose was pointing skyward".

But, I am .05 away from my 12.50 goal on the year. A simple decent 60ft away! I'll hopefully be getting to Martin within the next 2 weeks or so to best my 2010 goals, from there I'll try to work it as low as possible for this year and look forward to some new mods, hopefully including suspension and a FMIC, and possibly V3 for 2011. Then it'll be the Quest for 11's in 2011!

I was very very happy!

September 2010

I added a set of Toyo Proxes 4 to the car to replace whatever those old worn out things were on the 2g gst wheels I had picked up. I hit the track and promptly snapped 2 universal joints on my driveshaft on the first launch.

I installed a "new" used driveshaft and hit the track again a few days later. I had ordered an fmic kit but it arrived damaged in the box so I had to stay on the smic.

There was a pretty good showing for the test-n-tune but I decided to make the first run a warm-up instead of an all out pass. I lowered the launch rpm to 4750 and didn't get on the 2 step until the first yellow lit up so I didn't build more then a psi or two off the line. Ended up with a 1.999 60 ft. But, apparently the weather (around 65 degrees) along with the new tune made for some new power as I passed the traps, 12.471 @ 112.33!

Unfortunately as I let off the gas I felt a terrible vibration. Diving under the car after picking up my timeslip I saw that I ruined another universal joint on this driveshaft. I limped the car home in fwd mode once again and settled on looking forward to 2011.

October 2010

FWD mode FTL! I drove the car around for a while in fwd mode (welded diff) which was quite interesting. I'm really not sure how you fwd guys do it, wheel spin and hop like crazy. I got my ETS street/strip FMIC kit installed (don't worry I fixed the bov circulation). Also forgot to mention I got the front fenders painted before the shootout.

December 2010

Found a nice cozy winter storage home for the talon.

20.jpg

I was busy over that winter/spring into June, I stripped out over 100 lbs. for weight reduction. I installed a set of custom rear subframe/mustache brace bushings, a rear toe eliminator kit, maximal performance rear camber bars and a set of Megan Racing Coilovers.

21.jpg

April 2011

11's in 2011 was the mantra, oh yeah, track was supposed to open in April...weird. But of course the car isn't usually ready for racing until July/August anyways.

22.jpg

July 2011

Got the project "buttoned up" and to the track again, unfortunately my laptop died and I was forced to do 4700 rpm launches instead of 5500. I managed a best of 12.83 @ 109 with a 1.9 60'.

Soon after the track visit my T-case locked up while cruising. Turned out the "new" borrowed driveshaft allowed my T-case to leak which cracked it right up the side once it heated up from lack of fluid. I tried another replacement yolk and seal but even after putting in a replacement T-case it leaked. I constantly would fill the driveshaft up from then through the rest of the season.

August 2011

Time for another track visit!

Pass number 1 netted a new personal best 60 foot of 1.67. I'll live with that on street tires all day! The new suspension stuff is obviously helping. I'm sure with some more practice I can cut some low 1.6's at least. Unfortunately I missed 2nd gear (seems to be a driver mod issue on my first pass every time).

Second/Last pass I calmed down and concentrated on hitting the 1-2 shift. Cut a 1.68 60 foot and got her into 2nd gear. Shifted her on through and rode out 4th through the traps. Grabbed my timeslip at the booth and just wanted to smile!

12.25 @ 111.9!!!

BTW, I hate T&T nights, 2-3 passes most of the time, on a good night 4-5. Those were my only two runs that night before they closed up, track was packed and lots of breakage/cleanups!

DSM/Evo Shootout 2011!

After that track visit I was noticed that I could "hear" my bov while driving down the track at WOT, it wasn't the pshht, more like a steady wooshing. I pulled it off and crushed it. Put it back on the car and boost jumped from 21 psi up to 25 psi! No other changes, turned it back down to 21 and headed for the shootout. Also of note, the weight w/driver was 2740ish throughout 2011.

Took my 14b talon to the dsm/evo shootout in Norwalk hoping for a new best.

I got there exactly at 9 and headed for the lines hoping for a pass or two while it was cool out. Hit the line and headed for the lights. The car hooked up instantly, track was very sticky! If I'd been better with the clutch the track was perfect for some great passes, alas I need a better driver mod. Cut a 1.7 60 ft. But when I grabbed the timeslip I was still ecstatic. 12.091 @ 113.92!

Had a couple issues and we finally got lined up for the first qualifying round. Tried to hit the launch better but the tires broke loose and I managed another 1.7 sixty. But I hit the new personal best of 12.050 @ 113.36. Timeslip breakdown

1.708 60 ft.
7.709 1/8th ET
89.49 1/8th mph
12.050 1/4th ET
113.36 1/4 MPH

Then it started to rain
Fortunately it cleared up and I got three more passes in, but between the track prep going away and it heating up I couldn't get the timeslips down. The runs went down like this:

12.132 @ 112.82 (Launched about sideways from the wheels spinning, shows a 1.67 60ft though)
12.8 @ 111.83 (Didn't lift foot all the way off clutch enabling NLTS off the launch! OOPS!)
12.139 @ 112.72 (Once again spinning hard, but a 1.69 60 ft anyways)

23.jpg

24.jpg

http://youtu.be/eXnsJpU1ES0

I was pretty excited, got a little ahead of myself and predicted 11's at my home track with some cooler weather.

September 2011

No 11's for 2011 :notgood:

I was looking for any last little edge and decided to shim the wastegate to see if it could hold a little more boost. I never noticed a drop off at higher rpm, but wasn't really watching the boost gauge anyways. I shimmed it a little too much and overboosted for all of about 1 second...it was enough. Personally I still think the engine should have survived, only that piston failed which caused the rod to go through the block, everything else looked perfect. ITM pistons aren't known for being great...lesson learned.

25.jpg

26.jpg

27.jpg

I replaced a bent valve and threw in a spare stock 1g 6 bolt block and had nothing but knock issues with it. The car was put in storage and wasn't pulled back out until.

August 2012

Pulled the head and did a thorough check over and discovered the other intake valve was bent ever so slightly. I had 115 psi compression in that cylinder and had been blaming it on the old stock block. Yes you can have a bent valve and still have compression! Replaced it and drove the car to the 20th Annual DSM/Evo shootout. Got bit by the racing bug bad again. This last week I started tuning again and got a good baseline on the car for a track visit. I'm hoping to have track results again soon. I'm setting the only 2012 goals as getting back under 12.5. Hoping everything stays together!

Late August 2012 Edited post to keep the log more complete

The 2012 shootout was the motivation I needed to get going with the talon again. I had fixed the head issue and the car seemed to run strong so it was time to get to tuning. I took her out street tuning doing 2nd gear pulls to stay close to the speed limit. Started by taking out a ton of fuel and timing. I then proceeded to take the AFR's to about 11.4:1 and peaked timing at 18*. Figured that would be good enough to know I was safe for a track visit.

August 29th, I headed for Milan dragway with the wife. We were running a little late and showed up about 2 hrs after the gate opened. It was a pretty busy night as usual but I knew I could get 3-4 runs in if I hotlapped. Tech'ed in and found a parking spot to pull the passenger seat and tools out. Grabbed my helmet and headed for the lanes.

Got up to the line and was nervous as heck, launched like a tool, could smell clutch, missed 2nd and shifted way to high in the rpms :notgood: 12.78 @ 113. Figured my goal of 12.5 would be easy I concentrated on the launch and 1-2 shift for my 2nd pass, cut a 1.66 60' and got the shift but missed by 2-3 and 3-4 shift points. Still ran a 12.12 @ 113.5. I was pretty happy with that, goals met, but started wondering if 11's could be in the cards. 3rd pass I pulled 1% of fuel out (AFR's around 11.6:1) made the pass, tried shifting around 7k which was out of the power band and ran a 12.14 @ 114.2. A new best mph, leaning it out worked! Now I had to shift.

Parked her in our spot and decided to let the car cool for a little bit, watched some racing. Decided that 20 psi might as well be 21 psi so I gave the boost controller a half turn. Turned out perfect at 21psi. Got back in the lanes with a cooler car and really made a conscious effort to have a good pass. The track was getting pretty bad as they were sweeping the tire particles right into the area next to the waterbox I had to drive through. The launch felt ok, but lots of tire spin, 1-2 was perfect, hit the 2-3, 3-4, ride out through the traps, spot the win light. Good pass! Pulling around to the timing booth I fully expected a 12.0X slip. Grabbed it and got a little confused as all I saw at first was the 13.XX from the mustang I smashed. Then I spotted it!

Well I did a little bit better then hitting 12.5 for that nights goal! First time out after all that nonsense and I managed to run an 11.903 @ 114.82! 1.72 60' which can definately come down, fairly rich for E85, and some weight loss planned before the next trip. It was an amazing feeling! We packed it up and called it a night as they said they were closing the lanes.

Wow, you sir, are very lucky/blessed with good friends! Any idea who rebuilt that trans? I really like your motivation, and the way you set realistic goals with a budget and then achieve them one at a time, stepping stones to the next one. Nice work! :thumb: Looking forward to more progress! :hellyeah:

Thanks! The trans builders name is kept secretive to protect the innocent :sneaky: Let's just say it was built well and I got it directly from the builder which is why I won't offer names. I am truly blessed with great friends though!

I just went back and looked at realized my second awd 1g was where I started deciding to go after fast 14b times, back in mid 2005! It's definately been stepping stones and a few hurdles to get here, it's been fun though. Three attempts later I think this is finally the car I won't be getting rid of for a very long time.

As for the log, I'm not sure I'll get back out to the track again this year but I'm starting to get the itch to better the time with a few ideas. Plans are to attempt to take another 100lbs off the car, when/if at the track play around with a couple more psi of boost and/or leaning it out some more, more timing. We'll see, small steps at a time.

Well got started on the weight reduction plan today. Removed the front drivers seat and started fabbing a mount for my summit racing seat. After alot of cutting and fitting and drilling I got it in there. Only problem was a solution for the seat belt. Well with the canadian belts in place the bolt holes from the original belts were unusued, just unbolt the buckle from the seat and bolt it to the floor. It's a different angle to plug the buckle in and out, but the seat belt still comes across my body the same. Plus it's a safe spot to bolt the buckle to the floor considering it's the stock seatbelt hole. 25lbs saved. Good start towards that 100 goal. No it's not as light as a kirkey, but it was another gift from the wife some years back.

Got back at it finally. Lopped a whopping 7lbs off my already hacked front bumper, :thumb: Not as light as that aluminum one from JMFab but alot less expensive.

Also started gutting the doors. I did an old set of doors with drill bits and it sucked drilling through those spot welds, decided on this set I'll wait until I pick up a spot weld cutter. For now, these are light enough. 18lbs out total with another easy 8-10 left in there for the spot weld cutter.

So another 25 lbs. out. Total's at 50lbs. plus the exhaust removal should be around 30 lbs. 20 more to find somewhere, not sure if I'll hit that goal without spending money.

It's very cool, been following your build, wish I could go that far with mine! But, I'm still a few steps ahead of ya ;) You gotta be catching up.

To bad you're so far north and/or moving to NY. I used to live in Northern Lower (Atlanta, MI) but it's still quite a trip to you.

An actual dogbox or parts from dogboxracing? Always kind of wondered how a dogbox would fair with the 14b, but no way could I justify that kind of money. But, after seeing Christian Ellsworth run one with his 16g easily into the 10's the gearing may not be that bad even for this small turbo.

Swapped the manual/crank window assemblies into the car today. The power assemblies w/motor weighs 3.5lbs vs. the crank ones at 2.5lbs. So 2 lbs lost plus maybe 1lb for the wiring yanked out. Every ounce counts, but mostly I'm excited about being about to get my windows up and down instead of burning up another passenger side motor. 83lbs down, 17 to go. Going to have to get creative.

Subscribed Shane!

I'll try not to disappoint :hellyeah:

I'm starting to plan the next track visit, after saying I wouldn't haha! The car is pretty much as ready as I'm going to get it. The car is a bit lighter and I'll try a few other things to make it faster. I adjusted the suspension to hopefully help the 60ft. I may play with it further at the track depending on results. I set the coilovers softer in the rear and a touch stiffer in front. Depending on how the runs go I might try a few more psi of boost and/or leaning it out a touch. Only goal off the bat is besting 11.903. I'll let everyone know when I'm heading to the track.

EDIT: 09-21-12 A.M.
Finally said screw it, pulled the rear interior plastics and my "racing" carpet out for another 12-15lbs. I can't say for sure as my bathroom scale has gone from being consistent to reading different every time you step on the scale. Yesterday every time I stepped on it, it would read the same, now it's 1lb. different every time! Probably from overusing it! I also got a bit more of the crash beam out for about 2lbs. So it's real close to that 100lbs off goal. Those plastics/carpet will go back in for street driving though.

09-26-12 - Milan Dragway

With all the talk of what was left in it I decided to take it one more time this year on the street tires to see what could happen. Gutted about 60-70 lbs. out of the car over the last few to prepare for it. Ended up playing with suspension during the runs and turned the boost up to 22ish psi from 21 psi for the last 3 runs. Tire pressure started at 22psi front and 20 psi rear. Here's the breakdown.

1st pass: 11.998 @ 114.74 with a 1.791 60' (Soft rear/tight front, not so much)
2nd pass: Blown pass...
3rd Pass: 11.859 @ 114.78 with a 1.681 60' (Tight rear/soft front) Suspension helped
4th Pass: 11.876 @ 115.34 with a 1.703 60' Track started to give way a little more (same suspension) *Turned boost up to 22psi made more power as seen in mph.
5th Pass: 11.881 @ 115.63 with a 1.730 60' (no changes) track got busy, took longer in the lanes, night air began to cool pretty good for the mph change. Track really giving way as I came out going sideways lighting up all 4.
6th Pass: 11.812 @ 115.69 with a 1.659 60' (18 psi in all 4 tires) Good suggestion from Phil Beers to lower the tire pressure, worked out and netted me an even better personal best!

09-28-12 US-131 Motorsports Park Drag Strip

Just to update the log, some info is copy and pasted. Paul Volk loaned me his 26" Hoosier QTP's mounted on Motegi Traklites for a couple passes.

No changes were made to the car other then the wheels/tires from my 11.812 @ 115.69 from two nights ago. That pass was on 16" stock gst wheels and Toyo Proxes 4's in 225x50x16.

I was nervous as all get out for the first pass. I'd never launched on slicks and wasn't sure what to expect. Pressures were at 12 psi rear and 12.5 fronts, we had planned on starting with them higher but that's what they were set at and I wasn't chasing down an air compressor. I raised my launch rpm to 5500 and got in the lanes.

11.572 @ 116.12
1.609 60'
7.363 @ 92.72 1/8th

I was so excited, I laughed my way all the way back to my parking spot! I knew that was good enough for #5 on the 14b list w/out nitrous! Two more passes. One at 5250rpm launch...

11.676 @ 116.52
1.635 60'
7.444 @ 91.55 1/8th

And the money pass launching at 6k

11.541 @ 116.38
1.571 60'
7.332 @ 92.35 1/8th

Solid, consistent mid 11's on a 14b! What a way to end 2012.

For 2013 plans include a new clutch and my own set of lightweight wheels and slicks.

No complaints really, honestly with the last trip the track I didn't mind it even for the 1 1/2 hour drive there. After racing and half way home was when I started to hate it! But that's a long time to be in a seat like that. The cover definately helps if you want any level of comfort out of it, I like the rigid back and it seems to be at a decent decline position, if you wanted to change it you could make your bracket higher or lower in the front or back to accomodate. Only other complaint is when I made my bracket, even with the slider, I should have positioned it at least another inch back. If you mount it without the slider set make sure you choose your postion wisely, far enough back, and centered decently with your steering wheel. Personally if I did it again I would go without the slider and just solid mount it. It saves a couple pounds and depending on your bracket the seat sits kind of high, I'm 6' and my helmet just touches the roof skin, which is too high in my opinion. I'll probably be re-doing my bracket and getting rid of the slider so it's lower before next year.

It saves a couple pounds and depending on your bracket the seat sits kind of high, I'm 6' and my helmet just touches the roof skin, which is too high in my opinion. I'll probably be re-doing my bracket and getting rid of the slider so it's lower before next year.
Ok awesome. Yeah I'm not planning on using the sliders, just solid mounts. I'm 6' tall so that's good to know. Thanks!

No worries, I figured you were about the same height.

In other news, took insurance off the talon today, shed another tear. Yesterday I swapped it over to 93 octane to wash any ethanol goo out of the system. Drove it around for about an hour at wastegate level boost. I was actually impressed that it didn't seem overly slow, probably because I'm so used to driving my 4 cylinder truck ha ha! Hopefully within the next week I'll get back to working on it and start the process of getting ready for 2013.

Some progress being accomplished. The trans has been pulled and the clutch inspected, the pp looks ok so most likely a 4 puck disc will be going in to replace the old street disc. I also started on losing some more weight, found nearly 10 lbs in the dash to remove, and I tore down the dash and interior chassis harness along with some other plastics and removed another 10 lbs. I re-installed the harness yesterday and here's hoping everything works once the battery is back in :D

Further plans are to finish gutting the doors, remove the ever so slight little bit of sound deadening left in the interior, and start looking for other little ounces. I have a few spots picked out already. I'm hoping, along with removing the exhaust, I can get to another 100 lbs. out of the car for next year.

I'm also thinking about having the 14b rebuilt, I sent a note out to Justin about it, the shaft play is a little more then I'd like and I really don't want to experience a failed turbo. There goes a little more budget but I'd rather have it good to go.

EDIT:

Added to this post to help cut down on clutter. Removed another 11 lbs. today by removing some more un-needed plastic, and taking a spot welder to the rest of the crash beams in the doors and some miscellaneous brackets. There's another 2-3 lbs in the drivers door since I couldn't swing it open far enough inside the storage unit to remove it to get to that end of the crash beam. I love weight loss!

(Edit hours later)

Tackled the engine bay chassis harness tonight as well. Removed 4 lbs. of unnecessary wiring.

So after getting all the parts to swap in a 4 puck clutch disc for the 2600 and spending a couple days searching for my clutch alignment tool I ended up having to order one knowing the minute I did I would find the old one. So finally got the tool in along with a few extra goodies.

Got the four puck stuck on there for a photo op.

Then got it all bolted up to spec. While retrieving my torque wrench I of course found my old clutch alignment tool.

Got the trans up in place.

And started the process of getting the car put back together.

I should be able to get back at it Friday. Just have to get the axles stuck in and suspension bolted back up, fill the trans with fluid, oil change, few wires that need to be attached, bleed the clutch, and throw the battery back in. Should be interesting trying out the four puck for the first time.
