idk if its me but the throttle response in my GS is not good, when i try accelerating hard itll pause for a sec then start accelerating, just wondering if this is a standard thing or is my baby just tired(170k) haha it got alittle better after i changed the air filter, and i kno its not turbo'd and its 4 cyl but i figured itd be a little better than this, looking for good advice.
thanks

well for 170K im sure its still running strong but i doubt there is a problem..... is it an auto or 5 speed? if its a 5 speed try being in the right RPM when accelerating. The cams, although stock, start to really make their power around 3,000 RPM. So I would not find that there is a problem just gotta be in the powerband my friend.

not enough info. At what RPM range are you trying to accelerate in that car doesn't come alive till 3500-4k+? Also is you throttle cable tight? When is the last time you've done a tune-up?

find someone with a neon and test drive it. if your gs feels equal, then youre good to go. if the neon feels faster, then you got something wrong.

all in all sounds like it could use a good tuneup. do compression check while you have the plugs out (compression testers are $20 at harbor freight, if not less) just to be sure.

unfortunatly its a auto and id say its the worst in the 2-3k range. i havent checked the throttle cable, what do i look for? and i replaced the plugs and changed the oil and air filter not very long ago. anything else that i could tune up to better my acceleration? any more questions feel free to ask thanks

When going for a pull make sure the OD is off. For checking the throttle cable, pop the hood, and pull/push the cable slightly. If when doing this it is very sensitive to opening, its tight, if you have to press or pull a bit for it to open then its loose. Loosen the two bolts on the IM that hold the cable, slide it back until its nice and tight, then re-tighten the bolts. Hope that makes sense, it is easy to do, but kind of weird to explain. I personally keep mine super tight so its very sensitive.

I have a 5sp ESi(rs equiv), and my g/f has an auto ESi (gs equiv). Granted my car has much more work done to it, I find hers slow mainly because its an auto, harder to hit the power band, and have to wait for the tranny to downshift. Although if done properly for passing, by pressing the gas and throwing off the OD, you can get some pretty good pulls.

my buddy used "seafoam" on everything you can use it on and it brought his car back to life, freed up a lot of extra horses. i think its like $10 at autozone or where ever.

If anyone does this they should know what they are doing or they risk hydro-lock.

yea a good tune up should do the trick... stretched timing belts and timing changes can cause misfires or hesitation..

re-new all accessories:
belts
fuel filter
clean injectors (officially, not with "lucas injector cleaner")
pumps (oil,water)
plugs/wires
coil pack
02 sensors
seafoam
new/clean intake filter
ROYAL PURPLE oil :hellyeah:

and i promise your car will feel brand new

Take a spray bottle with soapy water look for vaccum leaks. Hoses might have cracks, worn out due to age.

Hows your auto fluid level and is your tcu fully connected. This located next to the starter and easy access. These might not have nothing to with it thought I ask. Since I have a 1998 auto also.

Have you removed the TB throttle body, cleaned it with CRC maft/TB cleaner. It dries fast like brake cleaner, safe on the sensors. I did this my old gs auto there was a slight improvement.

It could be you need a new IAC, if its original you never know it could it too.

Some people replace each sensor at a time.

Mine has no codes, but I don't think its perfect I could hidden problems that previous owner erased with a scan tool. :idontknow:

Agree but the oil I don't unless the motor is built.

I done K&n oil filter and Castrol syntech. in past till. Now, I go with mopar oem filter either conv Valvoline or GTX high mileage

im not gonna lie i dont know what or how to use seafoam.

ok so i just did what fotowntalon said to do and my cable seems pretty lose so i go to unloose the bolt i busted the bolt off in two pieces one of which is in the IM still LOL so im waiting for the PB blaster to do its thing on the other bolt and hopeing that one comes out clean so i can put the ground wire on it. two metals bonded together for 12 years=busted bolt imagine that LOL

So im curious about the timing belt, what r the chances of this being the culprit? ha

update! i got the bolts out and put new ones in and made the cable as tight as possible without the increase in idle, seems like it helped a little and i took it out of OD.

Glad that i could help a tad, and remember OD is your friend for gas saving. I doubt its your timing belt, if that's really off you will have a hell of a lot more power than tad bit loss of power.

More than $10, because you need to do an oil change and change the plugs after =P. Seafoam is easy to do though, and is nice for cleaning the engine.

i guess it improves throttle response, RPM, and basically more power is this right?
crazy how much smoke comes out after LOL neighbors will be happy. it sucks that you have to change the oil and plugs since i sorta just did this

sorry to bring up my old thread but i tryed seafoam and i don t see a difference in power. when i put the seafoam in the vacuum line my whole motor was shaking like crazy. i put it in the tank, vac line, and the crankcase. it did live up to the hype of a good smelling smoke show LOL

Seafoam just cleans out all of the carbon buildup in the engine. Your not going to notice much of a difference in power from using it. Did you ever check your throttle cable as suggested? I would check the throttle cable, make sure the tb is nice and clean, and maybe clean the air flow sensor.

yeah i made my throttle cable as tight as i could but i havent cleaned the tb or air sensor. what would i clean that with and how?

If the car still has a converter on it, check that to see if its starting to clog up. That will also cause a noticeable power loss.

They usually will rattle.
