hey. i drive a 1998 eclipse GS, and for shits and giggles my friend is sellin me his wrecked as hell GSX at a dirt cheap price. the engine and transmission and transfer case and everything is still in good shape, just the body's messed up real bad. so i was wondering if i felt like spending the time if it was possible to take everything off of the GSX and everything off of the GS and put the AWD w/ the 4g64 motor and transmission into the GS. Thx for your assistance.

or should i just be smart and do what everyone else is doing and swap some pistons and rods and get a stage 2 turbo kit?....... but i still want AWD, does anybody know if thats even possible w/ a GS body?

its possible i guess but it would be dumb,, it would cost too much money and take tons of time, also it wouldnt be something an inexperienced mechanic would want to tackle...

ok, go find a GSX that is the opposite of that one... blown motor, tranny ect. but has a good frame and body. Swap and go.

cant put awd in a fwd chassis... just make a fwd turbo set up.

I have to agree with Dave, several people have already...

I think he might be talking about GS bay and GSX bay. Still incorrect though.

The suggestion of going out and finding a nice rolling chasis is your best bet. Pull and replace. Then sell of the 2 trash elements of the swap and you are done. Shouldn't cost you all that much.

Can and should are different. I can slide sideways into a parking spot at 30mph and narrowly miss the cars on either side. People have done it. Because of the things involved in making this happen, though, I shouldn't attempt it. In fact, some would say that I "can't" do it, entirely due to the fact that it is far more complicated than it appears, although it has been done successfully.

If you have a clean GS, I would suggest to you, dustyb, that you keep your car FWD and N/A. It will be on the road this way.

A GSX can be purchased for very little. Our own classifieds have plenty to choose from.

i have a gs-t. is it possible, and easy, to take the drivetrain of a GSX and put it on the GS-T? i want a GSX, but i can never find any ones that are in good to relatively decent shape (of course, at an affordable price) around my area. is there any place to look?

It's a lot easier to swap a GSX drivetrain into a 4G63 car than it is to swap into a 420A car. Plenty of people have converted GS-T Spyders to AWD and it's apparently faily straightforward.

In my opinion, it wouldn't be worth it to swap into a 420A car, but if the parts were cheap or free, it would be worth it to swap into a GS-T.

what else would i have to change other than the drivetrain? any chips in the car? and would i have to worry about the GS-T engine working too hard because it's not used to the GSX drivetrain?

the flywheel/starter/tranny w/ front axels all the way back to the rear axels and all four hubs. The rear gas tank and the exhaust.

The engines are the same. both have the same power output so No, the GST won't be overworked but it will have to work a little harder in order to turn that transfer case, drive shaft, rear diff, and extra two tires. Basicly means you'll feel slightly slower from a roll given the drive train loss and the extra wieght.

... if it is dirt cheap just buy the gsx... keep the GS as your daily driver.. or if i were you.. i'd buy a cheap ass GSX with a blown motor tranny everything is screwed internally except the body is in great shape... and just buy it and play around with it... and once its up and going sell the GS....

You're probably thinking of 1Gs where they are totally different and the FWD to AWD swap costs upwards of 10k :thumbdown

Friend got it done at local shop on his 93 for including t-case for a grand of a little more, so maybe the inflation in Cali is high, but no not 10k.

That was gs-t to gsx.

The parts alone would cost more than a grand in the real, non-hook-up world. It's been discussed in the past. RRE used to charge A LOT (near 10k after all the parts) to do a 1G FWD to AWD swap. They won't even do it anymore.

If he really did give his 1G and $1000 to a shop and ended up with a functional AWD GS-T, that's a hell of a deal.
