I just picked up a used 90 EPROM ECU for my 90 GSX and I can't connect to it.
Now I have been playing with the lap top ports and make sure everything is connected right and my laptop is recognizing the cable. So that's good.

The car starts but I didn't drive on the new ECU. Anyways, so I started to browse the Internet and I am not really sure how ECMLink has to look like so can someone tell me if it is stock chip with a socked installed or is it really ECMLink?

God I am getting that feeling like I got used so please be the real deal.
Thanks in advance.

That is a 90 non EPROM ECU that has been converted to an EPROM ECU by ECMTuning. They offer this service on their website.

The chip that is in the EPROM slot is not a ECMLink chip. Your laptop will not pick up anything from the stock chip, ECMLink software is only compatible with an ECMLink chip in the EPROM. You need to purchase ECMLink.

That's what I thought. I guess I got used. But I have the cd and the wire that came with it but I never checked the actual chip. Well I got used. Merry Christmas to me. Thanks.

One more question. Can I change this chip myself if I order ecmlink or does it need to be solder in? On older gm cars you were able to change chips and since this is modded already can I just do it myself? I really don't want to spend more than I have to. I already over paid. This sucks.

all you need to do to change out the chip is simple grab it and kinda wiggle and pull just dont bend anything then take the new chip and line up the pins to the holes in the socket and push it in place evenly very simple to do honestly ecmlink is very good and if you plan to keep adding to the car get it but if you have a setup that you want and that is all you plan to do you can get a custom chip burned for way way cheaper and it will run good then just pick up a cheap safc with the blue screen (keep eyes peeled i found mine for 50 shipped) then you can make minor adjustments and be all good to go

Thanks guys. Well I contacted the seller and he is giving me a run around. He says that's what he got from ECMTuning and it should work and knows nothing else.

I guess I will take my loses. I will contact local athorities to see if I could take him to court but I don't know what would be the outcome of that. Live and learn, now I know that even if the person looks nice, talks nice it does not mean that you can trust them.

Lesson learn.

How much did u pay.. that's just a eprom ecu that's been socketed. Without the dsm chip.. the value of it done right is about 650$ but what u have is about 100$

I bought it in person. About 1 hour and a 1/2 drive from my house. I know where he lives, and I have his email and phone number. I paid $450 for it. I don't think this ecu cost $100. I think it's worth about $250 plus I have the cable. I just over paid. If I would to open it up at his house I would of asked myself a question that I asked here because it didnt looked correct. Maybe I try to sell my original ecu to get some money back. It's EPROM so should be worth something.

Contact his local police department to see if they can help you. At that kind of money, it may be (?) felony charges. If he claims ecmlink says it is an ecmlink chip, ask for paperwork and documentation. My ecmlink 3 chip is red.

Just wanted to update a little. I did ended buying ecmlink from extreme psi and now I have it installed. The original chip was very hard to remove. I actually broke my nail but it came out. Everything is working now and I can communicate properly with it. Now I just have to figure out how to log it but can't drive the car right now, it starts which is good. Doing other repairs that were over looked by the previes owner. Thanks everyone for the help.

Thanks for the advice but in the end I did get what I wanted I just over payed for it. Anyways I do have many questions about the link but right now I am just studying the program and what is what. I am in the middle of some repairs and I just got my parts in yesterday so they are going in hopefully this weekend and than when I will go on the road and experiment with it. I have been waiting on my brake booster being rebuild because I could not find one. Plus I have brake booster hose on order from Mitsubishi but that's coming apparently from Japan and I still have 2 weeks to wait for it. I am slowly realizing that parts are hard to find. It took 2 weeks to get my master cylinder also. And all of this time I can only play with the link at idle. Having 2 jobs don't help but she will roar soon.
