Emissions tickets in california?

I don't think cali is as bad as some people make it seem when it comes to getting pulled over for illegal mods; most people that get pulled over is becuase they are doin'g something stupid that attracts attention.

I had been pulled over a few times for other reason and out of all of those times only once had a cop mention my exhaust and that was about it. Didn't even get a ticket or anything. He just said it might be too light for some cops not to care about.

I also got pulled over cus a cop thought I didn't have a front licence plate. When he went over to the front to take a look all he said was "OH" . He just didn't see it. He didn't even mention anything about the huge FMIC pocking out in front.

It says lower than 60" for the front. I've done some research, and while it never says you can put it in your window, it never says you can't either. The plate is front facing and visible if I were to run a red light, which is their main concern anyways. I don't want to block my fmic and I don't want to sit it on sideways like the jdm crowd.

P.S. A windshield is considered a cover and an unsecured license plate on the dash of your car is still a safety hazard. Precedence has been set.

From what I heard there is no such thing as "hey I got a ref ticket. Im just going to pay a fine and keep all of my stuff aftermarket" The whole reason for someone getting a ref ticket is because they want to be sure that the vehicle gets put back to stock.

Another thing, I think getting a ticket for no license plate/in the windshield is one of the lamest ticket a person can get. Seriously what harm is the license plate doing right in front of the car to have someone take it off or put it behind their windshield.

If you have a problem with it blocking air you can just simply relocate it to the side above one of your fog lights and problem solved and you save yourself from a ticket.

CA doesn't give a damn about putting the cars back to stock - it's all about money. It's a non-correctable citation and you get fined either way, fixed or not.
It's all too obvious when there's an option to pay a monetary bailout and then your slate is wiped clean. Continue on your modding way. Though the bill can be on the order of $1200. I've heard of fines as low as $471.

You go to court and you're pretty much given the choice. Pay huge fine and go to ref, or pay huge fine and walk outta here today.

You know what I see a lot of vehicles without a front license plate and there is no place to put one on my bumper. So far I have not gotten a ticket for it when I got pulled over the two times I owned the car.

Same. One time I did, but he let me go. He wasn't interested in me they were on a manhunt or some shit.

I have a full 3 inch exhaust with a muffler in the end. I don't drive stupid but I'm always worried about the bad smell of not having a cat attract attention. That's all I'm worried about here in CA. Ohh and those smog check points. But those are mostly in the desserts citys. I hope. Smog check points would cause too much of a hassle here by downtown with all the traffic so I'm hoping I never get caught in one of those . Or those cameras on freeway onramps that read the cars exhuast . Anyone have advise for smog checkpoints?

Any more info on rolling check points or "exhaust cameras"? I can conceive the check points but I'm having a real struggle with the "exhaust camera".

From what I've read, the smog checkpoints are actually voluntary. I assume they can flag a certain model down,or if they smell the catless exhaust when your waiting to pass through, but they dont force every car coming through...

Your state government has overstepped it's bounds... the solution is to move to another state where freedom isn't yet illegal! This idea of being harassed and fined for having customized vehicles is completely ludicrous. You shouldn't accept being treated like second class citizens because of your hobby.

In fact, many of the advancements in engine efficiency are thanks to hobbyist tuners such as yourself. If the state agenda is reduced emissions, they should promote these activities. Instead, your legislature bows down to special interests and federal meddling- raising taxes and unjustly criminalizing this hobby.

The only thing California has done in relation to cars that I agree with is making folks pass a sniffer test.(not the visual or diagnostic test, I only agree with the sniffer test) I also agree with crushing convicted street racers cars, but I feel they should attempt to sell them to out of state dealers and private parties first. Then crush the cars that they cannot auction it off.

I'd agree, if you blow clean, what's the big dealio? Majority of our mods increase economy and decrease emissions on the whole. But we're just preachin' to the choir.

These tips aren't guarantees to not be pulled over but I assure you a flat black exhaust is less attractive than a chrome exhaust.

Girls use makeup to hide imperfections so thy are not as noticeable. From far you can't tell but if you get up close you can see but it's not nearly as bad as no make up. Same rule applies here.

It did for me, I have an evo that I was constantly getting pulled over for "modified exhaust" beacause my tip was shiny. Its a very quiet exhaust so they werent pulling me for the noise it was how it looked. I painted it flat black and have yet to have a problem. It actually looks as if I have no exhaust from a distance. It takes the cops eye attention away from the exhaust. I actually have a 10 page print out in my glove box I took from their website to show them that just because it's modified doesnt always make it illegal.

On the license plate location: DMV confirmed it has to be bolted to your bumper for it to get the ticket signed off. But at least having it in your window may deter your average cop from ruining your day.

That's still not the case. A cop may not care, but by placing it in your window you are announcing that you do not have it correctly mounted and your car can be pulled over for it at anytime. And once you're pulled over you're at his mercy.
