Hello dsmtuners! I've been a prospective DSM buyer for a while and I finally found what I was looking for on Craigslist at just the right price. Therefore, I now own a 92 Talon TSi AWD. The mods, to my knowledge, include: 3" Apexi turboback exhaust, FMIC, manual boost controller and a boost gauge. However, it's not running just yet. The previous owner wasn't too mechanically-inclined so all he was able to tell me is that the car seemed to make a "jet engine" sound right before it died on the highway. So now I have to diagnose the problem and that's why I'm here - to learn! Oh, and maybe gain some good DSM friends around the Seattle area.

I've always been a domestic guy because of the way I grew up. I also own a 2003 Mustang Cobra, which will always be my baby, but the world of AWD turbo 4 cylinders intrigues me. Plus the Cobra is still 2300 miles away sitting safely at my parent's house and I'm getting the itch to work on a car badly. Now here I am with a Talon ready to learn all about them and the 4g63. However, there's one problem: I just moved here about 7 months ago and I have no tools (besides a few screwdrivers, a crescent wrench and a hammer) and no place to work in. So if there are any people or groups of people at all in the Seattle region that are willing to gain an honest, likable 21 year old DSM friend while teaching me a thing or two I'd forever appreciate your kindness.

I look forward to all the knowledge I'm going to gain by being a member of these forums and getting my hands dirty.

Now here's the new toy:

Wow.. That is a REALLY clean car. I'm sure this is old news, but the best place to start is maintenance related items. All the fluids, check the hoses, and look for rust.

As for the jet noise, I would suggest pulling off the intake hose to the turbo and reaching in and trying to move the compressor wheel. Pulling, pushing, and moving around. If it moves around, it's probably toast. :(

Depending on if they replaced the clamps, you can loosen the hoses with a screwdriver. The hardest part is wrangling the hose out of the way. All and all, You can pick up a cheap tool set at walmart for 20-30 bucks.

Only other detail I can really warn you about, is make sure you tighten everything down when you put it back together. I don't know HOW many times I've lost power due to something being unconnected. Or idling funny cause the Recirc tube was disconnected.

A question for you, How far have you torn into the mustang?

Thanks! I'll try all this as soon as I can. Only one post in and I'm already getting help, this is wonderful.

As for the Mustang, I bought it with about $20k worth of mods and it's making 505 at the rear wheels. Personally, I've lowered it, changed the catback to 3" Magnaflows, replaced the alternator and swapped the clutch. It doesn't need anything else so I haven't had to do much other than enjoy the hell out of it. I'll attach a few pictures of it.

Hey Brock. Glad you signed up!

We'll get that thing running for sure.

I know we will, Nick. :)

Badass cobra bro ! Some on this site might kill me for saying this but the mustang was and still is my dream car of all times and hopefully one day i will own one.

As for the talon, that is one clean DSM you found yourself, wow, great find.
Good luck with it and as mentioned above, get all the maintenance out of the way first.

I'm not usually a fan of Fords, But that looks pretty nice. :)

One other thing is research research research. No matter what you think you might know these cars will show you what you don't know. Sometimes expensively. :p Course, Mustangs do too. :)

What's your plan for the car? Drag, Track, AutoX, or perhaps a quick street car?

With most cars it's the age old Maintenance, support, THEN mods. Going backwards doesn't work too well. :p

The 2003 Cobra was my dream car for a while until I finally bought mine at 19 years old. Even though I own one it's still my dream car and never disappoints me when I step on the gas and hear that ear-piercing supercharger whine. I'd be buried in the car if it didn't make more sense to pass it on to my kids. ROFL

Thanks, I like the way it looks too. ;) I've already bookmarked the vfaq and virtual tour of the DSM engine bay and I'm probably going to order the Haynes repair manual for 1gs so I'm planning on reading up. I learned a lot of what I know about Mustangs from reading forums so I'm sure this won't be much different.

My plans for the car are really no more than a fun street car that I'll take to the track for a couple sprints every once in a while. The main reason I bought the car though is to work on my wrenching skills so if I end up keeping the car it'll grow faster and faster a little at a time. I wouldn't be surprised if this turned into a drag car far down the road though.
