Finally the day has come where I can move some air with this car. I have been doing the supporting mods for about a solid year now from paycheck to paycheck. All while building the Buick as well. I just wanted to let yall know how amazing an auto feels under a turbo that can actually make some power. 3rd gear pulls just rolling into boost is the most fun I have ever had with the car and Im only peaking 15psi for now because I am still on the stock sidemount till I can afford a piping kit. But boy does it feel good to finally have a respectable little daily driven street car....the 14b just never did cut it for me.

I did run into some snags I wanted to ask yall about with the install. My first question is: does every 50 trim install require modifications to clearance the water pipe? I had to beat mine in a little bit and was just wondering. Second really isnt a question so much as a bit of info that I was unaware of and maybe will help some future people in my situation YOU WILL HAVE TO MODIFY THE SMALLER WATER LINES IF YOU ARENT RUNNING A 90 MODEL AIR TO AIR OIL COOLER. I was unaware of this and frankly it drove me nuts thinking of alternatives but thanks to a little help from a friend we customized the setup and got it on there.

I do have a front mount and some piping I got of a honda friend that I plan to install sooner rather than later so I can turn up the boost and not have to wait for the sidemount to cool down

Just wanted to update on the car as one day I will be on here reading my posts from years ago and will be able to recall the feelings I have had with the good ole' dizzum, good and bad.

All in all I am finally pretty much happy with my setup on this 162,000 mile stock motor and tranny.

Thanks for reading,
Greg

Congrats on the new turbo. You'll love it.
I had quite a bit of fun with mine back when I had it.
<----- My dyno numbers were on a T04e 50-trim and a stock longblock.

Whether or not you have to dent in the water pipe often depends on which exhaust manifold is being used. With many of the healthy sized turbos bolted to the OE cast manifold, denting is required. Most of the aftermarket manfolds out there will move the collector away from the block a bit to help alleviate this problem. My 50-trim was a T3, and the manifold that I used helped clear the water pipe by over an inch.

Thank you.
I dont think she will be hitting those numbers anytime soon LOL.
What was your boost set at for those numbers? No cams? What size injectors?

I would love it if I can get close to that out of this setup without going through a headgasket.

The main thing I love and was completely shocked was the spool time is almost identical to the 14b....when I took it out right after I got it finished I was completly shocked that there wasnt any noticable lag increase.

Im sitting pretty with about 55% idc with these 550s at 15 psi so I have a little room to put the sqeeze on her.

She's sleeping pretty good with no front mount right now too:sneaky:

If your 14b spooled as fast as your 50-trim does, then you fixed something with the turbo install.

50% with 550s isn't pushing the 14b any more than the 50 trim ;)

Not negating your happiness for what you've done so far. You definately have more room for like 750s and a bigger fuel pump and MUCH more intercooler.

27 PSI. Stock cams, intake manifold, and head bolts.
Injectors were 850cc @ 69% IDC with 110 octane race gas.

Lol yeah i was pushin the 14b pretty hard...about 20psi....and yes I did fix a problem with the stupid metal turbo to manifold gasket that was leaking with the 14b.....that was the whole reason for this 50 trim install....

Turned the boost up to about 18-20 today and did some logs and holy shit is this car a whole new animal....81% idc at that boost and feels strong as all hell.

Think the front mount will help much? I know its bottle necking big time but its doin so well right now I almost dont want to mess with it at all...Guess the only thing holding me back then would be the injectors...

This is what i have been waiting for with the dsm for the past almost 3 years I have owned it....it really feels that good....

Still wont launch to save its ass without a stall it will only build about 8-10 psi but thats a whole nother story.

Thanks guys for the input.

Man Congrats on the install.. I was looking at the 50 Trim for my GVR4 but went EVO3.. I do not know what have bult on the car but better upgrade that valve body on your tranny..

Your stock intercooler is holding you back because it won't be able to run the high boost that you want with that turbo, as the heat generated by compressing the air to a higher psi will heatsoak the sidemount. You will not get to use the more fuel the larger injectors can give you because you will be knocking at a lower boost than what will require the larger injectors. You need to upgrade your cooling and your fuel to merrit the 50trim.

But you have a great start. You obviously have the car running correctly right now, so your ready to go to the next step.

A little trick. . . especially if you have a walbro 255hp, you can up the base fuel pressure with your AFPR to 60psi. This will turn your 550s into 650s. Old Flow X [ SQRT(new pressure / old pressure) ] = New Flow. And either wally 255 can definately handle that flow at that pressure. The 190 might not be enough but will be close. You can get upwards of 400whp out of a set of 650s. You will need fuel control for any injector upgrade, but this will save you having to get injectors if you want up to around 400whp at the most. . .

Pretty much stock except for the supporting mods for this turbo so I guess she is what I would consider bolted...not fully bolted just bolted.ROFL

I have the roadsurge shiftbox for tranny upgrades....even without using the shiftbox it shifts solid...im quite suprised how this high mileage tranny is holding the added power....that was one of my biggest concerns with pushin more from my setup....

Thanks for the little trick ds-monster when I get my ecu back from jeffo he mentioned setting the regulator to 57 psi base when I was telling him what I had setup wise.

Not sure what pump is in the car as it came with one installed but I do have a high pressure wally sitting in the trunk for when this one starts taking a shit. Havent ran out of fuel yet with the pump thats in it so I can only assume:hmm:

350 sounds good to me:D doesnt seem like Im too far away from that.

I will definately get this front mount on as soon as the money comes in for a reputable piping kit (wonder if any vendors will sell me just the piping)

This turbo loves the more boost I give it....im just so used to the mhi runnin out of breath at the boost im runnin now.

Did I mention the sound? I was on the highway yesterday and just cruisin beside someone and I could here the turbo just crusin with like 10inhg...so i rolled in it and let the boost come on and it sounded a-ma-zing....too much fun right now:thumb:

Thanks for the comments guys it feel good to share my enjoyment with yall because you guys know exactly how it feels to finally reep some rewards out of our beloved piles of tin.

crappy cell pic but I wanted to get it on here.

Just to update....turbo failed about a month ago out of nowhere with about 1/8 inch in and out shaft play....NO up and down play which leads me to believe comp surge is what killed it even tho I didnt notice any....was running around 30 psi spikes tapering to 27-28 and it was a little street monster....motor has 180,000 on it and is still as strong as it was 40,000 ago.

Installed a 20g with a 17c comp cover and some sort of t3 hotside td06 turbine...it is quite strange but I got a killer deal on it and went external gate. It pulls much harder up top but is a good bit laggy...have a turbonetics cast manifold on the way cause i went cheap ebay tubular to get the setup going....cracked within two weeks of daily driving if that.

3800 rpm stall is being made as I type too:sneaky:

sure is fun walking on literally just about anything stock....z06 from a 20 hit was the most recent...:D

Nope....surge loads the shaft in a way that would destroy the journal bearings, not the thrust plate. The thrust system is in place to support the shaft as high boost levels are trying to pull the compressor wheel outward and upward.

In the pic the turbine housing appears to be a PTE model; if so, this thread would explain your sudden in/out shaft play:
