How can I quiet my wastegate dump tube?

I'm either going to get it routed into my downpipe or put a muffler on it or something. I just want to know what other people have done because I really need to quiet it down. I looked at supertrapp disc only mufflers but I wonder how much quieter it will be with one on there. Also, my tube is 1.5" and the smallest muffler they have is 1.75".

On a side note, I just want to say that with myhx35 and hks 40mm ewg I can hold boost at 8psi! That's incredible compared to my big16.

Vibrant is coming out with a wastegate muffler. It's not on their website, but it's in the new catalog.

Yeah your going to have to recirculate it back to the exhaust or drive slow and not go into boost.

Keep in mind the Vibrant Performance Wastegate Muffler is only for wastegates up to 44mm.

That should be big enough for anyone who's really concerned about sound levels from the wastegate.

I say turn the boost up. Less pressure to divert and less noise, all while making more power. Sounds like a win-win to me.

So true, it's amazing how much quieter my car is at 25psi compared to 14 with an open 1.5'' WG dump

I would re-route it back in, i'm going to do mine as soon as it gets warm enough to do the "unimportant stuff". Till then i'm only fixing what breaks and i've broken a LOT of parts this winter LOL

Building boost causes the wastegate to open. And building boost doesn't mean you're driving like an asshat.

OP: You have two options. 1) Re-route the dumptube back into the the engine's exhaust tract. OR, 2) Muffle it with a muffler of some sort.

I never had a problem with my dumped o2 opening while building boost. It would start to open right around 17-18 PSI and doing a full dump at 20psi.

Its possible, I guess that he is running much lower boost on a smaller turbo so I can see how it may start to dump quicker as it spools faster and hits its max at a lower RPM. I've always had a bigger turbo on my car so it was never an issue.

Oh and to the OP. Might want to look into a mild steel or Stainless recirculating o2 housing for your wastegate, thats what I ended up going to because I wanted to hear my turbo more than my dump.

Home carries some.

Thanks for the responses, except the smart ass EE who is an asshat for saying that.

I tried looking for the vibrant muffler on their website but I could only find it on dealer websites and none of them had pics of it. The guy who modified my dump tube so it would clear my o2 housing showed me some custom manifolds he made that looked VERY well made. He also said he could smoothly flow my dump tube into my downpipe. I might just do that unless a muffler will quiet it significantly, like half as loud as it is now or lower. I am still dialing in the setup so I am only running 20 psi and the thing is just ridiculously loud. And it sounds like a giant exhaust leak, which it is (duh).

Have any of you successfully quieted your wastegate dumps without going back into the exhaust?

As I said, I didnt have any issues with mine opening up so early that it would require any muffling when normal driving.

What turbo are you running? I was running a td06h-20g when I was dumping and I would not have my waste gate open up until about 3800 rpms.

Truth me told, its nice to reserc the wastegate, I love the sound of the turbo spooling.

Sorry, not trying to be a asshat brother, every set up I have been around there has not been premature wastegate dumping that would require any muffling of a setup under normal driving conditions. :thumb:

if you can find a method without re-routing it.. let me know, ill use it on my girlfriend maybe it will quiet her up

you could make your dump pipe from your wastegate longer.. route it down and along the downpipe, the longer you make the dump pipe, the quieter it will get, it wont be completely quiet, but it will deaden the sound some..

Reroute it. Sounds better anyways.

The simplest and cheapest option there is.. Putting a seperate muffler on the wastegate is almost so cheasy i can't decide if it was done as another way to squeeze a few bucks from a customer or if some one really thinks there's some advantage to it over re-routing the dump into the DP other than having it as another mod to list IMO it's strictly a "rice advantage" meaning it's jsut another mod to list weather it does anything or not....hahaha.. it almost sounds like a line from F&F ""dude, he's got an AIC controller, and a wastegate muffler" LOL LOL LOL..

A wastegate muffler sounds about like selling ice cubes to eskimos to me, it's about like buying a condom with "vent holes" in it for extra breathing LOL LOL If you want it quiet run it through the exhaust system i doubt there's HP to be gained from it having it's own muffler, and it probably sounds like a lawn mower as a "backup motor" when running one :D

I never liked my 3052/Tial 44 external dump, being my car is my DD'er in the summer. I went with the recircualted dump tube, about a foot down the downpipe, just before the bend. This should prevent any turbulance right after the turbine wheel (like you get in a factory style setup). I didn't notice any decrease in spool or performance just a big drop in noise (sounds just like factory again). Its just one less, bad attention attraction thing to have.

Do you have any pics Daren? I also have the 3052 and want to recirc it, I'm so tired of the dump.:notgood:

Actually I haven't taken any engine bay pics since I had it recirculated (will have to get on that this spring) but I just had all the turbo related pieces off to get a bunch of things ceramic coated. My downpipe is still off the car (& will be for abit still), so I can't get an installed pic for abit but I can take a pic of the DP with recirculated dump, if you like?

Yeah sure, if you get time, that'd be great. Thanks!

Here are a few pics to give you an idea. I just took it to my local custom exhaust shop, where they just cut a hole in the downpipe & then welded in an elbow from the dump to the downpipe. The welds defently aren't the prettiest looking but the guy did them with everything installed on the car, so was really lacking in space to work. Though he did a really clean job of where the dump tube meets the downpipe internally, so there's no protrusions into the downpipe, which is what really matters.

Looks like it should work. I have the older 40mm wastegate on mine, which means i'd have to make a completley different dump tube, hmm, maybe throw a v-band mid-dump tube for easier install/uninstalls. I'll have to look into it. Thanks for the pics daren!
