Ok, here's what's happening. I drive my car for a while and then turn it off. I come back out and turn it back on. As soon is it starts up I hear a tickity, tick, tick noise for about 3 seconds and then it goes away and I never hear it again. I'm thinking it could be the turbo since that's something that spools and could make this metal on metal noise. I checked the shaft and there's no play that I noticed. Any suggestions or should I ask in another section of the forum?

but it's only for 3 seconds and only when i start up. i thought the lifters happened while it was running and either faded in and out or was a continuous tick.

im really just hoping it's the turbo so i can make an excuse as to why i need to upgrade :D

Thanks for the quick replies and both of you saying the same thing helps me realize that it's probably that. I love this board :thumb:

have someone start the car and listen to the turbo.

when i started my car in the morning, it would make this weird shredding of metal kinda sound, almost like a deck of cards going through a 100 spoke dayton rim, it only lasted for about 2 seconds then stopped. it led me to believe it was the turbo spinning without any oil in it yet, since it stopped as soon as oil was pressurized throughout the system.

when i installed my evo16g i never heard this noise again.

does it mean the t25 is blown? probably not, mine had 0 shaft play and was still pretty clean on the inside(55k on it). another buddy of mine thinks it was the starter not disengaging fast enough, but after i told him my theory he started to believe me.

I just went through the same thing, I pulled my lifters out and cleaned them let them soak for the weekend and reinstalled them and my tick is gone

yes, that's exactly what it's doing, but not on a cold start - only after it's been up to temp and driven previously to starting it.

Oil is a little thicker when cold so may stop the ticking. It is real cheap and easy to clean the lifters then they are done if that solves your problem then great if not then I would look a little deeper

I know what your talking about, I have the same noise every once in a while. Only when its warmed up. Say if you just shut the car down and ran in the house and came back out and started it up it will do it right? I get the same thing over once in a while and the noise is different then regular lifter tick right? To me, at least with my car it almost sounds like the starter is dragging or something like that. Ill try to get a audio clip up if I can.

P.s I wrote and thought about the started dragging before I read the comment that was previously put on here, any ideas on how to make sure its not the starter?

rule of thumb: if its ticking you should probably run away it may blow. jk ya its lifter tick we all have it some worse than others. I work at a machine shop usually if we get hydraulic lifters we soak them in gear oil instead of regular motor oil its a thicker and will stay in them for a little while giving people the impression that a better job was done. another thing that we do before that is put them in a parts washer. truth of the matter is, is that the lifters on 1g's have too small of a hole in them so when the are squished they spray out but when they open its hard for them to pull back in and replace fluid. the 2g's are much better but not perfect they make a 3g lifter designed by mitsu but never put into any cars from what i know but you can get them at dsm motorsports i believe. they have a juicy hole in them that eliminates this problem.

Well I don't know about the original poster, but I know what lifter tick is and I do get it. However, the sound I believe he is talking about is the same one that I am talking about, which is definitely NOT lifter tick. The sound comes from a different part of the engine bay and it only does it a certain time, not to mention that the sound is different then lifter tick.
