To Jersey Slim,
I don't have all the information that I would like to have with regard
to turbocharged exhaust temperatures, but I would not run my engine
at anything over 1300 F.. On a naturally aspirated, high compression
engine, 1300 F. is the edge of destruction. Usually you can tell when
you are running too lean by the smeel of the exhaust system. This can
be detected right from the drivers seat. As the exhaust temps exceed
1300 F. you will get a rank, acrid, mild sulfur sort of smell. I usually
describe it as a "hot smell". This should serve as a warning to immediatly
add some fuel to the system. I ran my 98 GSX at this level for about two
months before I began the rebuild of the car. When I disassembled the
engine and turbo, I found that the exhaust manifold and turbo were pure
white on the inside, and the manifold was cracked almost completely
through the center. The car ran like a bear, the whole time. But, it was
most definitely on the edge of damage. I did not have the EGT hooked
up during this period, because I was going to build a new engine and
didn't want to take the time to weld in the bung for the sensor. But,
the "hot smell" was present if I leaned down the engine even 1 point
on the SAFC. I generated 232 WHP at 4450 RPM at 51% throttle with
a stock T25 and side mount intercooler and 2 1/2" exhaust. The boost
would follow my foot on the accelerater, like it was hard wired to it. Lots
of fun to drive.
