Can anyone please tell me what the average exhaust temperature should be when reading it through my egt guage? Currently, I am getting temps of 1000 to 1200 on a hot day; 95+ deg outside. Is this average? In the cooler seasons, its reading 800 - 1000 deg. What is a dangerous temp? My car is a 96 eagle talon tsi

Thanks!:thumb:

Ditto. We need more info.

At idle, most see around 900F after the car is warmed up. I'm getting about 1500F at 80MPH cruise, which I believe may be a tad high, but I think I'm having timing and/or fuel flow issues.

It also depends on what load the car is under (like going up a hill)...this Q is too vague. I see 1400F which is normal cruising at 75ish. 1600f is the uh oh range, but can be surpassed for a few seconds if your not knocking (aka a well tuned car, or climbing a hill in W. VA on the highway at 85MPH).

Just to add a little bit more info... Mine will creep up to as much as 800C when going downhill (just barely on the throttle), obviously it drops like a rock if I get off the throttle completely :) . It tends to drop as I go uphill, usually to low 700C's. Ends up with about 750C at the end of a 3rd gear run, which is a little low, but if I pull any more fuel I lose timing...

Well for me, I think I am in trouble. When I'm going up a hill on the freeway or something and if I drop out of 4th gear's powerband, if I am on the throttle, my EGTs go to 900*C. I get scared, so I usually get off the gas. I don't know why this happens, but I need some advice to fix it. While cruising at 80-85mph, my EGTs are at 830*C or so...sometimes it can go up to 850*C. Can somebody help me out?

there really is no majical number.. that if you pass your in trouble,

I would say 900C or 1600F is about the HOTTEST you want to see.. thats a hard 4th gear pull.. going over that for a few seconds wont kill the motor, but if your hitting 1k C or 1750F you are running pretty lean..

just make sure your not running SOO rich that youve got burning fuel in the exhaust many.. you will red VERY lean but be running super ritch... poping and spuddering and shit..

you may be a little lean in the low rpm area, considering while cruising even at 85mph your probably at only 25% throttle or less, try ritchening your low end a tad and see if that helps.

At 25% or less, fuel settings shouldn't matter as the car is running off of the O2 sensor feedback. And if you adjust the fuel outside the range the computer will compensate, you get a CEL really quick... Maybe just needs a new O2 sensor?

no magical number until you hit about 1650 and then start detonating spark plugs...................i only speak from experience. detonation sucks. i hear the boom. stop. take off the exhaust manifold and see white speckles everywhere..........didnt know wtf it was until i took out the #3 plug (NGK bpr6es, btw) and saw that the ceramic had exploded and shot down through my motor.....i was wondering what the little ding, di, di , ding was right before shutdown. it was the electrode part of the plug bouncing off the turbine wheel. so, there is no magical number that you do not want to exceed.........

just be sure as hell you dont go above 1600.:)

bpr6es? how much boost ya running? I would use one range colder (bpr7es)

"At 25% or less, fuel settings shouldn't matter as the car is running off of the O2 sensor feedback"

true but if you have an AFC you CAN alter the settings enough to lean bottom end out some if your not careful..

But you should still get a CEL for "too lean" if the computer has to try and compensate more than 16%, right? I don't think the AFC defeats that ECU function???

i used to use bpr7es, but changed back to the standard for my dsm which was bpr6es after i found that it really did not matter if you were running 6 or 7 until you got into the 350- 400 hp range. i run around 13-14 psi. i have egt, safc, and datalogger. i did not see any difference between the bpr6es and bpr7es, whatsoever. at higher boost, i dont know.:)

mr96gsx408, maybe check your base ignition timing:confused: just a thought. i run around 1400 at crusing speeds (60 mph) and 1500 to 1550 at wot. if i lean it out anymore i get more than 5 to 7 counts of knock. at 1550 i have like 4 counts at 6000 rpms or so. just my set up now. i haven't had a chance to tune it much.

Right, you could hear a little piece of metal hitting the bloades of a wheel spinning at 100,000 rpm. I guess your ears can hear sounds at 700,000 Hz then? Should we call you spot?
