I searched little. Maybe I am just blind. I am
sure this has been answered a million time so I appologise in advance.

Well I got my new Dell inspiron yesterday and noticed that it does
not have a serial port (I know, I know I even read it on the site). I
read that some of you are using the serial to USB adapter and it is
fine. But I have heard from others.. some using AEM that the serial
to USB is a BIG NO NO !!! They say you will lose data.. Anyone know
why they say this?

Now I have seen some PCMCIA cards with serial ports around on the net
from 120-190 bux. Now thats a lot of loot for a card. I have also
seen some on ebay going for around 50. How many of you are using the
PCMCIA cards and how much were they and where??? Are there any low
end ones (like the ebay ones) that I should stay AWAY from and why?

Thanx

I am in the same boat. I have been using the Palm version of DSMLink and it works great, but I would like to hook up to the laptop sometime soon. I haven't heard anything about using a USB to serial adapter.

If anybody knows, please inform us.

PS - Have you asked on the DSMLink user group on yahoo? I haven't.

EDIT - I see that you did ask on the user group. The answer appears to be that you can, in fact, use a USB to Serial adapter.

I just ordered a USB to Serial adapter from my favorite internet computer place. www.mwave.com

We'll see what happens. I figure for $27.00 I can't go wrong.

I am using a USB adapter with my DSMLink/Dell 2650 and have no problems at all. Samples as fast as the locals who are using serial cables. I got the adapter from www.usbgear.com

I used a USB to Serial adapter when I had DSMlink as well and I had no problems. I did though burn out my Eprom on my AEM supposedly because of the same converter. I have no idea why though.

It must be something to do with AEM specific then. SO far from here and other places, I have got a bunch of people who they have used ti with no problems.

Just an FYI, not ALL USB/SERIAL converters will work.

When you buy one, make sure you buy one that has already been proven to work.

I don't use one, so I can't say anything other than to check the DSMLink list archives for what other people are using.

Maybe start a "list" of known to work devices?
