Whats up guys.

I have been reading a TON of threads on this issue. Not sure where to go next.

This past weekend I replaced this:
- Blown 13g turbo (wouldnt make good boost)
- leaky cracked 2g exhaust manifold
- stock O2 housing

With this:
- Rebuilt 14b Turbo (set to wastegate pressure, have yet to got WOT on new setup)
- FP Manifold
- Megan O2 Housing

Since I got a good look at the old setup, I noticed lots of white, indicating a lean condition.

Two weeks prior I changed the O2 sensor to a brand new unit. Went from 7 to 9 MPGs to 20-23 MPGs. Also replaced the plugs with NGK-BR7ES's or something. Maybe I should drop to 6's??

When I pulled the old O2 sensor, it was white on one side and black on the other. I also saw that my valves where white, while the runners where black.

Here's a pick of the blown turbo hot side. Very white.

Car has stock fuel system (to my knowledge)
No wideband.
I do not have a logger.
All Boost leaks have been fixed.

Anyway, this lean issue has me a bit worried as I do not want to hurt my engine.

Instead of just throwing parts at the car I wanted to get some opinions on where I should go next. Or maybe I should wait a bit and see what I can find out after this new setup has had time with my motor, as the old setup probably was doing more harm than good.

Thoughts?

White valves and black runners in the head is normal, the valves are not cooled by water like the head is and neither is your o2 sensor. The fact that one side of it is black and the other is white is because one side has direct heat on it and burns off all the carbon. As long as your car is stock and your fpr is working then I don't think there is a problem with what you're seeing. The car could have been running a little lean due to a bad o2 sensor but since you said you replaced it you should be fine now unless you try to run like 18 psi with stock fuel set up. If you keep the boost around 10-13 you should be fine. If your going to do any upgrades to your car, first thing you should buy is a wideband.

Leave the spark plugs as they are actually one step colder than stocks and aren't too much of a difference (you did gap them correctly - right? Road Race Engineering has a table for spark plugs on their site). I would only change them if you were having starting issues and the plugs were fouling up. Your problem can be anything from a clogged fuel filter, fuel injectors to the maf. Does it drive normal or does it bog and hesistate. Try dropping in some fuel cleaner/fuel injector cleaner as it will help in regards to maintenance. Your old setup might have had either bad plugs or a bad 02 sensor which would help explain the drastic change in fuel economy.
